How much do you spend on your kids birthday presents????

Bit nosey I know but my oldest are due to be 4. We've previously spent £30 but noticing you don't get an awful lot for that. My kids are very close in age so they haven't inherited a lot of toys and to be honest don't have a lot. What we do have is a tad babyish so thinking we should up it but don't want to be too indulgent. What are your views????

I think its down to personal choice and circumstances.

We spend around £100 - £150 on DS's birthday but only have the one child. This year he was 4 and we went bowling followed by a trip to the toy store where he picks his own gifts. If we had more than one child it would be less.

However we dont have a large family so he gets very little in other presents and I think that can make a big difference.

my dd1 and dd2 birthdays are this week we are giving dd1 40.00 cash thats what she wants and then spending 40.00 on a bloody dr who scooter for dd2
so around 40.00

I don't look at what we spend, it's what they may want or 'need'. I don't see the sense in spending a lot just because it's a birthday. We bought dd a flick flack watch for her 6th birthday, it was about £20 including delivery. I think the most we spent was about £60 on a bike, but it will do 3 kids, so cost per ride v v cheap!

We spend around £100 and have 2 DD's (2&4)whose birthdays are 3 days apart. If we spend more or less then £100 then thats ok, it depends what they are into at the time. Again it depends on circumstance etc.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 28/08/2007 20:11

Usually around the £15-25 mark - depending on finances that month. Christmas usually a little bit more (£25-35)

snowleopard · 28/08/2007 20:12

Previously it was about £30 at xmas and birthday but last time we ended up spemding £60 because we saw a kitchen set that we and DS really liked. I still feel bad about it actually because I swore I wouldn't let it creep up. I'm resolved to keep it down next time, as it makes very little difference to hm. I do tnd to buy him toys at other times too though, if I think they need updating.

Crocky · 28/08/2007 20:12

It depends on what they need really. Ds seems to get more spent on him than dd. He needed a new bike last year, dd had his old one. So he had just over £100 spent on him and she had about £50 on toys.

GodzillasBumcheek · 28/08/2007 20:12

Dunno about dd3 as she hasn't had one yet - and it's very close to Christmas. Dd1 and Dd2 get about £60 spent on them each, because they have grown out of toys, and that's when it all gets more expensive (i think).

scattyspice · 28/08/2007 20:13

About £30

OriginalUglyBetty · 28/08/2007 20:15

Depends on what they want, and finances but usually around £100 - £150.

Its when they want the parties, that empties you out! what happend to musical chairs and pass the parcel!

Anyway im waffling - its down to the individual really

Hulababy · 28/08/2007 20:16

Has been up to about £100, plus birthday party costs on top. Varies though. We only have one child which helps.

ruddynorah · 28/08/2007 20:19

not sure she's only had one birthday, we spent about £40 cos we wanted to get her a wheely bug. if i had seen something i wanted for her that cost £30 i'd have got that. i've seen a dolls house i think she'd love for her 2nd birthday, it's £90. but then i might see one for £50 i like better. so what am i saying? not sure really, i buy a 'thing' rather than sepnd an amount IYSWIM. she gets so much from other people it doesn't matter what we spend, but i like it to be one decent thing.

too much probably, but i spend less on them both at christmas. everyone i know does it the other way.

TellusMater · 28/08/2007 20:36

I spend what I need to to get what I want, IYSWIM.

So it varies from birthday to birthday, child to child. Mine are both young (3 and 6) and don't have much idea about how much things cost, so it doesn't matter to them whether I spend the same on each of them.

And while I spent £££ at Christmas on a climbing frame and slide for the new garden, I spent £10 on a goal for ds's last birthday.

MilaMae · 28/08/2007 20:40

Many thanks for that. Don't spend anything during the rest of the year so feeling a bit better about upping it. Think this year is a tricky one as they've outgrown HappyLand etc and are embarking on Playmobil- need I say more!!!!

Othersideofthechannel · 28/08/2007 20:58

Nightowl, we spend less at Christmas too. After all why should Father Christmas get all the credit!

LIZS · 28/08/2007 21:02

This year we have spent about £60 plus a trip out and party to come.

nightowl · 28/08/2007 21:02

i know, the selfish old git

Othersideofthechannel · 28/08/2007 21:07

LOL

DD2's birthday next week and I've spent just under £40 on her present. She's having a party for 8 at the Build a Bear Workshop on top of that so you can imagine what that costs

twinsetandpearls · 28/08/2007 21:14

I don;t buy her a present, she has a party and that is enough.

twinsetandpearls · 28/08/2007 21:15

THey get lots of presents from friends at the party , I tend not to get her a lot at Christmas either as she has more than enough.

Blossomhill · 28/08/2007 21:17

About £100, although spent £130 on dd this year as she wanted a ds and I managed to get a good bundle deal.
