Feeding 1 month old

Hi all,

I'm a new mum to a 4 week old girl and I'm not sure how much formula I should be giving her. She was 9lb at birth and the health visitor is happy with her weight gain so far. She's been having 5oz every 4 hours until now where she's wanting 5oz every 2 hours. She sleeps through from 10pm to 6.30am without feeding though. I'm not sure if I should feed her every 2 hours during the day as she seems to want or increase the amount she has at a feed. I tried giving her 6oz which she finished and went 4 hours to her next feed. So which is better - less food but frequently or more food less often?

Thanks in advance!

6oz 4 hourly

I would feed her when she seems hungry rather than timing a specific amount between feeds. Are you doing paced feeding which is supposed to prevent overeating?

Thanks, I'm not timing exactly and am feeding when she shows the feeding cues but it just naturally seems to be around the same gap each time 😊

I would feed on demand. I have a 4 week old who is my 3rd child. She’s currently taking around 4oz every 3 hours. They’re all different, as long as they are having wet/dirty nappies and seem happy it’s fine.

My DS wanted feeding every 1.5 - 2 hrs during the day. Think he would have anywhere from 4-6oz depending on how hungry he was.

Thanks everyone! Looks like I'll offer the 6oz as an when she shows the cues and see how much she wants at the time. Good to have the reassurance 😊
