DD not wanting to go to school with burst blood vessel in eyes

DD is 14 and doesn't want to go to school because she has burst the blood vessels in her eyes due to vomiting when she had a stomach bug, which has now gone. This happened on 2/1/2020. The bottom half of the white in her eyes has gone red. She experiences some mild irritation in her eyes but I don't think it's too dangerous for her to go to school, though harsh lights do hurt her eyes a bit more now that it's happened.

After some research on google, I found that it takes around a week or two for it to heal completely. She's already had 3 days off school after spraining her ankle in PE in September, so I'm worried that her attendance is going to get worse. However, I don't think her schoolwork will suffer if she's off because she's very bright anyway and says going to revise while off (she revises a lot haha).

Should I let her stay off? Or should I make her go into school? She's really worried about going in and having people think that she's a freak, and she worries a lot about everything so I don't want to make her worry even more.

it can take a good few weeks to go so it's not just one day she wpuld be off for.
I'd 100% send her

I’d let her have a day or two at home just whilst she gets used to it and then back to normal. My DD has anxiety and pushing does make it worse imo

No I wouldn't let mine stay off because they had red eyes. I'm in Scotland where we have no fines which makes me more likely to let mine stay home.

If this was a paid job would you say it was fine for her to have a few days off? Doubt it.

I'd send her.

My mum let me stay off when I was around this age because I had a stye. Kids can be savage, I knew I'd be teased all day.

Just for the record, I'm now fine with going into work with such an ailment.

I’d let her stay off, as someone who has suffered with anxiety from a young age, this would have terrified me at the prospect of being bullied at that age and pushing someone with anxiety to do what makes them anxious usually makes it worse in my experience. Honestly her school work won’t suffer, school isn’t the be all and end all. I’d feel self conscious about that too at her age and as @mynameisntlouise said, kids can be mean!

Bless her, I imagine she feels very embarrassed at her age. DS1 had this happen when he was in Y8 (for no reason at all! GP said they just happen sometimes randomly) but he rather enjoyed grossing his classmates out and making them go 'ewww' for five minutes before the novelty wore off! It looked so much better after a day or two and was barely visible three or four days later, if that's any consolation.

DesLynamsMoustache · 06/01/2020 11:26

Tbh I'd probably keep her off for a couple of days with the proviso she does revision during that time and that she has to go back on a certain date. Teenage girls can be savage and I'd rather a few days off her attendance record than her being distraught and embarrassed. I know which will have the longer term consequences. Presumably she doesn't want to go because she knows the type of reaction she might get, so I'd trust in what she is saying on this occasion.

I am prone to this problem and although I don’t know why they help, the Optrex Night Restore Gel eyedrops make a massive difference. I put them in before going to bed and mostly, when I get up, my eyes are better.

All very well saying she can stay at home and revise, but what if she misses an important new part of the curriculum while she's away?
