What age for train table

My 22 month old got a wooden train set for Xmas which we chose to glue down the tracks and a few big parts. He's managed to unstick the 2 big parts but so far doesn't seem hugely interested in pushing around the train on the track. He loves taking all the wooden people and trees off and throwing them

Is he too young for this toy?

Not too young maybe just not interested yet.

My 15 month old is obsessed with trains and has been for a couple of months. Every playgroup we go to he heads for the train table if they have one.
Got him a little set for Christmas that he spends ages pushing the trains about and then when he gets sick of that he pulls the track apart puts it back in the box takes it out and makes me build it again.

His main thing is books and he likes going under the table and back out again. He just loves exploring and isn't really concentrating on any one thing at the moment apart from books

I know all children play differently, but in my experience all the fun and play value with wooden train sets is in learning how to fit the tracks together and designing their own layouts (which are very simple at that age). I would take the tracks off the table and let him have a go at building his own. You could do it with him to start with but give him the opportunity to choose the pieces and make decisions about which direction etc.

My 22 month old loves his trains and tracks! We just got rid of the train table as all my two did was climb on it and you are limited to the layouts...

Flamingnorahs · 31/12/2019 11:11

Laying the tracks down is the best bit! How about unsticking them or getting more so he can do this? He can chop and change as often as he likes.

Well, he is playing, just not how you want him to! My similar age DS likes putting a few pieces of track together then ripping it apart then putting it back together. He likes watching the train go over the bridge but isn't very good at pushing the train round himself but that's ok. He's very good at making me pretend cups of tea.

If your DS likes books, have you tried a story sack?

What's a story sack?

I wouldnt say he is too young for it but maybe it's just not his area of interest yet. Some 22 month olds would love a train set, others might not.

We got given one for our 1yr old. He loves to use it's to cruise along. We've hidden all the train stuff but have balls and small/medium trucks etc on it for him to play with x
