What did you dress your summer newborn in?

So am expecting second baby mid June. Have had a peek at old baby clothes when we got decorations out from loft and everything 0-3 months is long-sleeved and cosy as my DD was born beg November and we lived in a freezing flat!

Long sleeved bodysuit vests and long sleeved, some fleecy, sleepsuits. If you had a newborn June/Jul/Aug, what did he/she wear? I know summer weather is not dependable but I live in London so we normally have some heatwave days/weeks. I don't really like putting tiny babies in 'real clothes' like jeans and T shirts.

Short sleeved vest and baby gro. On some really hot days, a romper instead

JudgeRindersMinder · 30/12/2019 13:01

What @Settlersofcatan said....and a nappy 😉

Lordfrontpaw · 30/12/2019 13:03

Just a baby grow - it was during a heatwave.

My dd was born end of last May and you probably remember most of last summer was a heatwave. She spent many days in just a nappy and nappy and a short sleeved vest as it was so hot.
Bedtimes were usually vests or long sleeved vests on cooler nights (to save chilly arms), no bottoms (except nappy) and a supersized muslin tied into the crib to make her feel covered.

WeirdPookah · 30/12/2019 13:04

Not a lot!

She was born in 2018 when that heatwave struck (I so loved having to wear my support stockings in that). She mostly wore just a short sleeved vest and looser leggings if needed, or a cute romper.

BertieBotts · 30/12/2019 13:04

Short sleeved vests. We did use normal long baby grows in hospital though as they need to be wrapped up warm their first few days regardless. So don't focus overly on keeping cool and forget any cosy things!

I bought short sleeve rompers but they just looked too weird on a newborn so barely used them.

sirmione16 · 30/12/2019 13:07

Rompers nothing underneath

isittheholidaysyet · 30/12/2019 13:07

I think they called it a romper suit.
Similar to a babygro or vest,
Short sleeves like a vest. But with legs like shorts, (imagine a babygro with the arms cut off above the elbow and the legs cut off above the knee.)

My DS was born at the end of june this summer.
It was incredibly hot here so many days he was just dressed in a romper when we were inside.

Outside I made him wear a long sleeved romper, light cotton pants or a cotton onesie with socks.
I made sure he was protected from heavy sunlight by his clothing and used a special sunscreen for babies as well.

Pegase · 30/12/2019 13:09

Oh wow this is going to be so different. I found it so depressing at times having a winter baby and the dark, rain and cold. Plus put the snowsuit on to go to park, wrestle it off to go in café and repeat ad infinitum.

Now I just have to worry about baby not overheating Hmm

I still have the romper DS came home in 21 and a half years ago. It was lovely smooth cotton jersey (a right-on present from an American friend) and we paired it with the teeniest pair of cotton socks.
Something like this.
Then there was the blanket, the hat and the car carrier before the nursing staff would let us out of the unit!

@Honeybee85 which sunscreen did you have suitable for a newborn if you don't mind me asking?

Romper is the watchword then- had forgotten about those. Long gap between DD and this one to come!

Hi @Pegase

I live in Asia so we use a local brand.
I know my friend at home uses the one from Nivea for babies and she says it’s good stuff!

Selfsettling3 · 30/12/2019 19:37

DD2 was born during the hottest week of the year. Post partum hot flushes along with breast feeding a little hot water bottle was not comfortable.

She was either in just a vest or romper or just a baby grow.

Selfsettling3 · 30/12/2019 19:38

Make sure you buy fans before the heat wave hits.

Pegase · 30/12/2019 19:41

We have regular tower fans but am seriously considering investing in some Dyson style mega fan.

I had my son in July, just as it hit 40 in the UK. He spent most of his first month in just nappies, I refused to leave the house.
Once the country decided to enter a more sensible temperature he was in vests day and night.

Congratulations, fingers crossed we don't have a ridiculous summer for you in 2020

MsMarple · 30/12/2019 19:56

My summer babies had those short sleeved rompers. They seemed very comfy and cool as they were looser than vests.

Cremebrule · 01/01/2020 03:07

I’ve had two summer babies. They still used sleep suits a lot of the time but when it got really hot, they’d be in a short sleeve vest, just a nappy or little rompers. I had a few dresses but rompers were easier at that age. This summer was pretty rubbish compared to the summer my first was born so my baby didn’t really that much. My first lived in things like this which were lovely and soft.
