Hi

My 17 month old daughter has really bad eczema I hate seeing her so bad :( it’s all over her back, chest and in all her creases. We have oilatum bath and body lotion. But I’m willing to try anything, I’ve just purchased some body wash and shampoo from baby kingdom products which I’ve heard great things about for eczema.

So basically just wondering if anyone can advise any products to help her. I’m going back to doctors obviously but unsure I’m long term steroid cream

Goats milk cream works for some people.

Do you know if there are triggers which make it worse? I had really bad eczema when I was a kid and always used oilatum - afraid I can't help with more recent products - but mine was triggered by dairy, so I drank goats milk instead. Bathing less often, and have soft breathable clothes is helpful too.

I'm sure there are more knowledgable people on mumsnet who have dealt with it in their own kids who will hopefully be along soon though!

I use childs farm products on my son and it really helps. They do shampoo, body wash and creams.

Hi thanks for replies

I definitely need to look out for triggers as it has just suddenly developed over last 4 weeks, she had a milk intolerance as a baby which was quite bad but all tests from doctors now say she’s outgrown this and has had no issues drinking it now but I’m going to keep a closer eye on that now. I’ve childs farm and that doesn’t seem to help.

Thanks everyone tho x

Do not bathe her too often. Once a week at this age if she has (or is prone to) eczema. Ours had bad baby eczema and after countless trips to docs eventually got referred to a paediatric dermatologist when he was about 5 months.

Gave us stronger steroid cream and an emollient but on the instruction that we bathe him only once a month until he was 1 year, and then once a week after that. He would get 'washed' once a week at swimming but we had to lube him up with the emollient before and after.

And the best lotion, recommended by the PD, was called Physiogel AI. Available on Amazon (no prescription).

He is 16 months now and we never have to use the steroid cream any more and use the lotion once a week after bath time. His skin is beautiful now.

Hydrocortisone 1% and zerobase moisturiser helped our DD- prescribed by the dr.
Then used sensitive washing powder for her clothes separately to ours

There’s a cream called Aquamax that’s very good.

Dairy causes mine to flair up even though I don’t show as having an intolerance so it’s worth experimenting with cutting down and seeing if it helps.
Oats tied in the feet of tights and soaked in the bath helps a lot.

How often do you bath them? I had bad eczema as a child and still have it as an adult but less severe. DD has mild eczema, she's 18m. As per PP we bath or shower her once a week which is usually after swimming. Occasionally she will have two in a week but never more than that. All the healthcare professionals we have spoken to have agreed once a week is enough. DH is actually a trainee HCP and my DF is a clinician.

With cremes, DD is mild so we have only had to use 0.5 per cent hydrocortisone for hers sometimes and that's been enough. I use 1 per cent for myself or sometimes mometasone which is a strong steroid that I have used since childhood quite regularly with no ill effects. For moisturiser I use Diprobase or Zerobase (almost identical) which I get prescribed. For DD I use them too or Sudocrem or Sudocrem's moisturiser or Johnson's baby moisturiser.

My daughter now 8 has had eczema since she was small. Unfortunately it can be a long process to find somethingthat works- I have tried all the 'magic' ones people recommend out of desperation- Robertson's,childs farm etc.

The biggest difference for us was getting referred to a dermatologist. Dd was allergy tested, and tried a mixture of creams over a long period of time.

We have now settled on cetrabaum (sp?) Piriton as required, cotton gloves, she has various other creams for when it gets worse - normally when the season changes. Went through a period of using montelaukast (sp again?!!) also but after a while that had some not so good side effects.

Would recommend just getting seen by someone who specialises in skin conditions as what works for one child doesn't for another and also what works for a while may not work forever.

You have my sympathy. I hope your dd finds something that helps soon

When I saw the Dr for DS' eczema she said you need to tackle the flare up (so steroid cream) and then use creams to keep the skin in good condition. We use a mix of oileatum, aveeno and a prescription lotion to keep his skin ok. Child's Farm was awful and made it worse.
