5 week old chewing hands?

My 5 week old DD keeps putting her hands in her mouth and chewing! She has a dummy but picks & chooses when that soothes her, any reason she prefers gumming her hands?!

I'd say either hunger or she's just found them so exploring them. Babies learn a lot by putting things, including hands, in their mouths.

All babies do it... she’s found her hands!

DS is just over 4 months and his hands (and sometimes other people's hands) are still his favourite thing to put in his mouth. I've tried all sorts of alternatives but it's always back to the hands. I've given up now!

It's quite normal and can be a sign of early teething.

With a baby that young, hands in mouth is a classic sign of hunger.

Mine just liked his hands. Then when he got older he like chewing mine too.

Too young to just be exploring her hands. That's hunger, I'd say.

Buy the little mittens you get in kiddie shops. This is normal

OP, it’s hunger!

Andersonx3 · 24/12/2019 21:11

Hunger?! She's EBF on demand and always on the boob! How strange! She's feeding at least once an hour if not more regularly! Greedy girl. Thanks all, merry Christmas!

It’s how babies learn. First about themselves, and next about the world.

Before you know it she’ll be gnawing on her toes!

Selfsettling3 · 24/12/2019 21:48

Exploring. Babies put everything in their mouths. Just wait until she discover her toes as they will be in her mouth too.

When my 10 week old DD chews on her hands it means she's tired. It's when she's getting to the stage of being over tired and it's almost like she's frustrated and trying to self soothe!
