Newborn with a cold and stuffy nose

My 2 week old baby has a cold :( his nose is all stuffy and he sounds like a snoring pig when he’s laid down - albeit it isn’t a continuous snort it does settle down.

Just fed him now and he was really struggling to feed and breath, so I’ve sat him up and his seemed to of cleared it but is there anything I can do to clear his little nose at this age? I don’t want to go poking round up his tiny nose unless it’s safe to do so and will actually help him.

I have had a cold so he’s probably got it from me or from one of the visitors we have had.

I breastfeed him so I know he will be getting the anti bodies from me

Following with interest!

Saline nose drops is about the only thing you can do until they are 12 weeks, it’s rotten.

Heartburn888 · 21/12/2019 01:03

Do you have a brand that is recommended?

It is gross but I was told by a health visitor to gently suck the snot out of their nose.

SkintSanta · 21/12/2019 01:19

Snuffle babe. Think he’s too young to have carvol in the room on a muslin but Snuffle Babe do both a vaporub and a saline spray suitable from birth and no bad ingredients in them. Our midwife recommended them, as do our health visitors. They do a few other products too I think, but have only ever used these two and then the Calpol plug in and karvol on a muslin as she got older. Actually the Calpol plug in might be suitable under three months. All are sold in boots.

SkintSanta · 21/12/2019 01:21

Oh and karvol is now Klearvol but definitely 3 months onwards so not suitable. Calpol plug in is also 3 months onwards, just checked the box of ours.

SkintSanta · 21/12/2019 01:23

Sorry it’s the snuffle babe saline spray and the snuffle babe vapour oil that are suitable from birth. The vapour rub is 3 months again.

You need a humidifier during the night and need to air out the house during the day (obviously making sure baby is appropriately wrapped). Also, raise the cot at the head end slightly so any mucus in his nose can drain away. Other than that- I highly recommend sterimar nasal spray or one equivalent for the baby's age and a nasal aspirator- these are gross and babies hate them (probably because they make their ears pop) but they do work.

titnomatani · 21/12/2019 01:29

This is the one we have. 15 months later and we still use it on an almost daily basis :/

DD2 had a cold at 1 week. BM up the nose is supposed to work wonders.. However after speaking to 111 I whacked some Snuffle babe on a bib and tied it to her crib, and would highly recommend the Saline drops as opposed to the spray and a nasal aspirator. She hated it (and still does) but there is something oddly satisfy about seeing it all come out!! 🙈 I will forever be amazed at how much rubbish their little noses produce! Be warned though her colds generally last 7-10 days (she's on her 3rd now) and she's only 5.5 months. Ohh the joys of a Year 1 sibling!!

Gemm83 · 22/12/2019 14:31

Forgot to mention I would put a small amount on a bib whilst she was having cuddles with people and just lay it on her chest.

Stérimar - Baby - 50ml www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003VMR7A0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Q73.Db0YGA3V4?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

This has been fab for my newborn who had been very congested since birth.

MustardScreams · 22/12/2019 14:38

Breastmilk up the nose is fab! They’re not massive fans of it, obviously. But leave it for a while and then a good suck with the snot sucker and it’s does really help.

Sparkle733 · 22/12/2019 14:42

Snuffle baby spray and a nose aspirator as pictured above.
Also, prop baby up in cot.

ArgyllFTM · 22/12/2019 14:44

When my daughter is too stuffy to sleep lying down I run the shower hot with the cubicle closed, and sit in the bathroom with her for half an hour or so. The steam really helps to clear her nose. Obviously keep baby away from the hot water and be really careful he doesn’t overheat, especially as he’s so little. Now she’s older she’ll lie on her tummy on my knees so gravity helps to drain it too - for a tiny baby maybe try the ‘tiger in a tree’ hold.

avocuddl · 22/12/2019 14:44

Sterimar is the BEST! Combined with the snot sucker someone posted above will sort him right out ☺️

saywhatwhatnow · 22/12/2019 14:53

A humidifier might help in the room you are sleeping in. We just got a cheap one off amazon and still use it regularly now at 19months. Use it with water to start but once your DS is bigger the baby olbas oil dropped in helps with stuffy noses.

Heartburn888 · 23/12/2019 21:30

Thank you so much I’ll kitty the breast milk first, I actually have the ability to squirt it out due to an old nipple piercing site I have 👍
