Sleepyheads, do people still use them?

With DC1 it was a lifesaver, only way of getting him down and napping not on us even up to 5 months old. Now they seem to be totally against the lullaby trusts advice, but i cant find any reported issues?!

Are they still used?

I know there was a lady on here whose little one got caught in the strap at the bottom so we would always make sure that was open

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2017/oct/06/uk-retailers-halt-sale-of-baby-sleep-positioners-after-us-warning

Sleep positioners have been linked to 12 deaths in the US, there's a risk of suffocation when the baby rolls but can't roll back yet.

Bibbidybobbitysplated · 19/12/2019 15:09

I did see that article but it suggests its not the Sleepyhead specifically more the cheapy ones. Maybe i will do more looking into the US issues as i know even here certain brands were never deemed safe by midwives etc.

I will do what is safest of course. Just the idea of no sleep for months terrifies me as this time i will have DC1 to contend with too

Ah I've just reread it, that was sleep positioners which were advised against by the lullaby trust before my last pregnancy but the sleepyhead is a pod and has only recently been added to the "not safe at all" list

I use the sleepyhead for my DD but it's just for use downstairs she's 9 months old now I'm hesitant to use it in her cot even though she can roll from front to back I'm still a bit wary of something happening as it stands she's sleeping in it more at night lately because she's not only hit a sleep regression but she's teething so lots of sleepless nights for us but she does settle in her sleepyhead downstairs with one of us keeping an eye over her I know that doesn't really answer your question but I do find them good and of use

She has the grand size as before that she had the purflo nest which was her DB before hers and again it was used for downstairs naps

Bibbidybobbitysplated · 19/12/2019 17:28

How did you find the purflo? I've been looking at those too.

Its a tough one, we negate risk in all other ways and have an angelcare monitor to use with it should there be an issue but then if there was and baby didnt make it I'd never forgive myself. Sleep deprivation also is a massive risk factor too though for safety which I do like to consider

Fucking hell I didn’t know this, I’ve heard such great things about Sleepyhead too

Watching the thread with interest!

HangryCaterpillar · 19/12/2019 17:37

I use a sleepyhead overnight with my DD, I weighed up the risks of putting her in the sleepyhead (the only place she'd sleep other than on me) vs me falling asleep holding her. There isn't enough room in it for her to roll over but we are still using the small one

Bibbidybobbitysplated · 19/12/2019 17:42

@ShirleyPhallus i LOVED my sleepyhead with DC1 so chances are i will still do so

Theaccidentalthief · 19/12/2019 17:42

We used our sleepyhead for downstairs naps, one of us was always in the room when it was being used and baby settled well into it. I wouldn't use it for overnight or unsupervised because if anything happened I'd never forgive myself. If you do decide to buy one TKmax had them on offer the other day 😊

Bibbidybobbitysplated · 19/12/2019 17:43

@HangryCaterpillar thats exactly it isnt it, risk comparison. DC1 would sleep in the sleepyhead or on me. We gave it up at 5/6 months when he was no longer next to me all night

Theaccidentalthief · 19/12/2019 17:44

No judgement btw to anyone who does use them overnight etc, as parents I think we all listen to the advice and make our own decisions for what is best for us 😊

Bibbidybobbitysplated · 19/12/2019 17:48

@theaccidentalthief i will have a look at tx max thanks for the top

I love ours. Used it for both of my DC mainly for nightime. I stopped when my youngest was a few months old, but recently went back to it and she barely stirs.

We use the movement monitor too but I also put a blanket in so the sides aren't quite so steep.
My DD is now 6mo and she couldn't roll in it if she tried.
I'll stop using it when she migrates to a cot in the next month or so.

Dandelion1993 · 19/12/2019 18:04

I've never had one as I couldn't find a medical professional who would recommend it to me.

chocolatcroissant · 19/12/2019 18:57

I've never used one but it was a lifesaver with my sister's little one who was a really terrible sleeper.
I'd use one as a last resort.

See how new baby goes first. They might be a better sleeper than your eldest.

2beautifulbabs · 19/12/2019 19:07

I loved our purflo it was really good and funnily enough we bought that at time for my DS as the sleepyheads we thought were rather expensive at £125 where as the purflo was £55 maybe £60 it's last my DD until she was 8 months old even though it says 6months I ended up buying second hand sleepyhead which still wasn't cheap but as it's the grand it will last a lot longer you can however buy the bigger purflo I think for £136 i think it doesn't have a mattress like the sleepyhead it has soft mesh so that the baby doesn't overheat I use to just put a blanket over it during the day for some extra comfort for my DS and DD to sleep.

I also have the angel care monitor in cot bed but I'm still worried about my DD sleeping in her sleepyhead I over think things though but I do get where your coming from regarding sleep deprivation it really is a killer in itself and I've found myself many nights when I've held my DD in bed to get her to go back to sleep fighting myself from not sleeping with her in my arms

I really think you've just got to weigh up everything and do what's best for you and your baby

Wordie · 19/12/2019 19:29

I loved our sleepyhead. We used it for overnight sleeping and naps. They are signed off for overnight sleeping in Sweden, because they have had a lot of testing but not had enough research here. My midwife was happy for me to use it.

My baby always remained on his back, once he showed signs of rolling we weaned him off it. I would go with your instinct. I’ll use mine again next time x

Bibbidybobbitysplated · 19/12/2019 19:45

I think maybe we will play it by ear, can always get one next day delivery if it comes to it I suppose.

@wordie yes I'd seen that about Sweden having them approved overnight and from my understanding Sweden generally has much much higher safety standards than us for child related things (RF til 4 being standard there and government recommended for instance)

I used sleepyheads for my twin girls they slept in them during the day and at night, they’re both great sleepers, and found it made transitioning them into their own cots in their own room a doddle, no fuss at all.
I stopped using them at 6 months when they outgrew them.

Eeeeek2 · 19/12/2019 22:35

I used one for both dc, I'm sure it was on the ok list for dc1 wasn't approved by the time dc2 came around.

I balanced the risk like others have said, I fell asleep in the chair with her and scared myself silly. I didn't start with the sleephead but it was the only place she'd stay for anytime that wasn't me.

Tobebythesea · 20/12/2019 19:39

It’s not recommended as it’s not completely flat.

I would only use it as a last resort and totally desperate.

tami2k · 25/12/2019 00:32

I got a cheaper alternative from amazon £69 in desperation as my baby will not sleep at all in his chicco next to me. He is starting to like it now. The one I got the top part where the head is places is made from a soft mesh so well vented. It is a risk only use if no other option
