Disposable or reusable swimming nappies?

I'm off on hols soon with my (then to be) 11 week old ds to a villa with a pool. I'm pondering over the type of swim nappy I should buy - disposable or reusable? Any advise/tips would be appreciated! Many thanks.

Reusable - better for baby and the environment.

FlameBatfink · 24/08/2007 18:19

Reusable - can be handy to have 2 though

mintyj · 24/08/2007 18:20

I used disposable ones but rinsed them out at the end of each day and left them to dry. Usually lasted 2- 3 days per nappy. Sounds a bit disgusting as I'm writing it but they only do little wees and it's all diluted in the pool water anyway! I found that very young baby wouldn't do poos when in the water anyway. Have fun!

If you're rinsing them out anyway... why not just use reusable ones and get nice soft feeling ones rather than papery?

SoupDragon · 24/08/2007 18:23

Because if they get pooed in you can bin them. I only reuse Just Wet disposable ones

nappyzone · 24/08/2007 18:53

reusable but would get two as mine always poos in his within an hr for the novelty factor!

FlameBatfink · 24/08/2007 19:17

Ahh, good point! I've never had a pooey swim nappy, so I forget abputthat

Chirpygirl · 24/08/2007 19:23

If he is going to be in them all day then definately 2 reusables!
I only have one reusable so if we are at the pool or only in it for an hour or so she is in that but if we spend the day at the beach I take disposables just in case....

nappyzone · 24/08/2007 19:28

yes also if just at the pool i tend to whip it of after a dip and put him in a normal pocket for lolling about as they are only poo catchers and either way disp or reusable if you then sit bubs on your new and he pees yuu get wet!

FlameBatfink · 24/08/2007 19:29

A fluffle with no wrap works well swimming too

Chirpygirl · 24/08/2007 19:31

Really? a fluffle? but they are suyperabsorbent, do they not get crotch nappy? (you know, when it is so wet it hangs down below the crotch....)

nappyzone · 24/08/2007 19:35

noooooooooooooooo are you setting her up flame? seriously??? imagine the looks ! tell me more....

FlameBatfink · 24/08/2007 19:46

Done up tightly with a nippa, it just sort of squeezes out when you bring them out of the water

JennyWren · 24/08/2007 19:48

At the swimming pool at home, a reusable every time, but on holiday, when she's in and out of the pool/sea and I want her to stay in the same nappy for a while: definitely a disposable! This is ever since she pooed in her reusable whilst playing on the sand one year - she never poos in the pool, but it's just not the same when playing.

Chirpygirl · 24/08/2007 20:31

I have to know, why did you try it with a fluffle in the first place?!

FlameBatfink · 24/08/2007 20:42

We went to my dad's and he had bought one of those big inflatable pool things... hadn't planned to put DS in as he was only a few months old. It was hot, so we got in... luffle was all we had with us!

1dilemma · 25/08/2007 21:30

SO would you use the fluffle again forthe next swim or are you having us on?

FlameBatfink · 26/08/2007 01:43

I went to the beach on Friday - took a proper swim nappy and the fluffle as my back up

Seriously not having you on - best not to leave it on for running round too long after water, but great for in the water, and squeezes out quite a bit for a bit of running round time.

Chirpygirl · 26/08/2007 07:48

I always have a fluffle in my change bag as that's what we always use so next time I am near water I shall try it out, am still a bit thouhg.
And doesn't the sand get trapped in it something chronic?

FlameBatfink · 26/08/2007 11:00

Tend to only use it in a non-sand situation since he has been older.

FLIER · 26/08/2007 11:14

I've got 3 disposable first size swim nappies here if anyone wants them, ffp.

ChristinePlushPants · 26/08/2007 22:25

Have always used the washable ones, even when I used disposable nappies I preferred washable swim nappies. I found them more adjustable than the disposable ones and would last a longer weight range, as we didn't swim that often there was no point having a big pack of disposable ones that I'd end up not finishing, but it's very easy to pop a reusable one away for the next baby, takes up next to no space. Also they are much nicer looking IMO. Never had a poo in one thankfully though dd1 did wee on me lots in the early days when we went swimming (she hated it!). Reusable swim nappies often crop up in NCT and other nearly new sales, or ask around, someone may have one you can beg or borrow.

Laura032004 · 28/08/2007 11:40

We've always had reusables - managed to pick up about 10 2nd hand at NCT sales and the like over the years. If they do poo in them, hand wash as best as possible, then put in the sun to get rid of any remaining stains. They'll be back to white in no time. I usually take a bar of washing soap with me on holiday just for nappies and other poo accidents.

makesachange · 29/08/2007 15:23

Cute idea re fluffle but of course in a swimming pool the chlorine would damage it over time - and if in an outdoor pool with sunshine it's not a good combo for the chemicals. Rather like putting bleach on a fabric and then hanging in the sun, it just degrades it. Good emergency option though!!

Swimming nappies are made from fabrics which are not affected by chlorine.

I would also look at the explosive issues with anything other than a swim nappy (which is why I like neoprene swim nappies with leg cuffs because they stop them). Swim nappies with nets in are like a chocolate fireguard with runny poo under pressure! Although they work fine in most cases.

reusable
