Leaving white noise on all night in nursery

DD (6 months) has just moved into her own room. She sleeps much better with white noise on, and always wakes up when I turn it off so I’ve been keeping it running all night.

I keep the video monitor on my bedside table and can hear when she cries but can’t hear any smaller noises over the white noise.

I hadn’t really thought anything of it initially but I’ve now got the fear that she could randomly start choking or have difficulties breathing and I wouldn’t hear it.

Am I just being paranoid or should I cut the white noise?

We use white noise too. To be honest if your daughter is actually choking you're unlikely to hear it - real choking is silent. We have a breathing sensor mat but that's not foolproof either- still, it did give us a little more reassurance.
All you can do is make sure that all sleep safety advice is followed e.g. no cot bumpers and nothing in the cot with her. It is scary though.

We’ve had white noise on all night since DD was tiny, went in to her own room just after 6 months. She still has it now and is 2.5. I can easily hear her cough, cry or grizzle over the sounds. I think realistically that is all you can listen for anyway - apnoea or similar you wouldn’t hear anyway.

Best thing you can do is follow safe sleep guidelines.

The main thing for me is that it’s annoying - I’ve had 2 years listening to waves all night long via the monitor!

You can get gadgets with sensors so they play white noise (or music or whatever) when baby moves or makes a sound, and they are silent apart from that. Might be worth investing.

Ollie the Owl
Whisbear

All do same/similar thing.
