2 baby classes in one day

I've managed to book 2 baby classes for my little boy that look really good, however I've only just realised they're both on the same day and I think it's going to be too much for him. One is a baby massage class and the other is a sensory class. I can't find local options to change either of them to another day so I'll need to pick one.

How old is he and do you have time for a nap in between?

Tigger001 · 17/12/2019 19:48

I took my little one to 2 in one day quite often.
Some times there were time for a nap inbetween.
Although they may nap in baby massage, it's really good.

He's only 4 weeks, he'll be nearer 8 weeks when the classes start, we'll have an hour at home before we need to leave for the next class.

I would do baby massage for one term/set of classes and then do baby sensory in a few months. I think 8 weeks is a bit young for baby sensory tbh, it works better if they can grasp things and/or hold their head up to do tummy time and look around to see what's going on.

RhymingRabbit3 · 17/12/2019 20:08

WhereS baby massage is much easier when they're tiny and can't roll off!

marmiteandmarmalade · 17/12/2019 20:11

Totally agree with @RhymingRabbit3 to do baby massage now. Learn that first then you can continue that at home and switch to the sensory class later when your baby will get more from it too.

How long in between classes? When i do two classes in a day i usually finish the first and drive to the next venue but get baby off to sleep and have a quiet coffee before the next one starts. I can never be arsed going home in the middle if its only for an hour or so

JoJoSM2 · 17/12/2019 20:15

GIven how tiny he is, I’d do the massage class and leave the sensory for later.

doadeer · 17/12/2019 20:18

I think it will be a waste of money to do sensory. My little boy enjoyed those from 4 months id say. I still went to classes to get out the house but he wasn't always engaged

georgialondon · 17/12/2019 20:29

Mine loved baby sensory even at that age.

sqirrelfriends · 17/12/2019 20:33

Baby sensory was a waste of money imo. DS just cried and ignored me at that age.

I would just do the one class a day, it's more manageable but then I'm not that organised.

Fundays12 · 17/12/2019 20:35

Both are great classes but baby both exhaust babies. I would do baby massage first as you can’t really do it as they get older.

goingtoneedabiggercar · 17/12/2019 20:49

The classes aren't particularly expensive so I could try both and if he doesn't like them I don't need to go back. I asked when booking what the recommended age was and they said from birth but I hear what you're saying. He's been holding his head up from birth but other than that he might not get a lot from it.

My DS regularly just slept all the way through baby massage at that age Smile I enjoyed the tea and biscuits.

goingtoneedabiggercar · 17/12/2019 20:53

I signed him up for the sensory class mostly because he loves watching things, stared at himself in a mirror for about 20 mins last week (although I know he can't grasp that he's seeing himself) we do tummy time but just sat on my chest he can hold his head well when he wants to. The only thing he grasps is my finger. He was a big boy and he's quite strong but as he's my first I don't know how/if that would translate to him enjoying a sensory class.

...... We did sensory when he was a bit older and more awake and he loved it, 8 weeks seems little for sensory, it'll either go right over his head or might freak him out.

Sweetooth92 · 17/12/2019 20:57

We did sensory from about 7-8 weeks and my son did enjoy it! He usually nodded off in the last 5-10 mins but he really seemed to engage/follow the stuff with his eyes and slept brilliantly afterwards. While he got even more out of it when he was mobile, he did benefit younger and I will be taking my second from a few months old

ChaosMoon · 18/12/2019 06:39

I started baby massage at 8 weeks. Never got to massage her in class because she just wanted me to hold her upright so she could squeal at the other babies. She had a great time and we practiced later at home. She enjoyed it when we did it at home and the skills I learnt we're invaluable when she got a tummy bug a couple of months later.

Lots of the babies in the group enjoyed sensory at that age too. I think it's down to how you feel about rushing between the two, but from the way you talk about your LO, I think you could make it work and both enjoy it. You may need a glass of wine afterwards though.

DrPimplePopper · 18/12/2019 06:50

I run baby classes and usually parents do just 1 a day. Massage is very popular with younger babies and they are generally chilled out and nap well after - my record is 4 hours! - so you might not want to be rushing to another class. Sensory is often more suitable for 3/4 months up (even though they all advertise as 'from birth' which can be misleading!) so I'd suggest contacting the sensory teacher to see if you can move your booking to the term after. I'm usually fully booked with a waiting list so if it's similar for that teacher they may not mind moving your place as someone else could take it.

doadeer · 18/12/2019 12:37

The other point to it OP is whether you have paid in advance and what happens if you have a poorly day or a terrible night - would you lose the money from both?

goingtoneedabiggercar · 18/12/2019 15:48

I have a membership with my local council for the classes which is great value so missing a class here or there wouldn't be the end of the world. The sensory class starts a week before baby massage so I'll try it and see if he likes it, if not we won't go back for a couple of months.
