Lay flat travel buggy

Hi all,

FTM due at the end of Feb. We have a holiday booked in July, so baby will be about 5 months.

I'm wondering what people would advise to do regarding a buggy in this situation. I don't really want to bring our expensive buggy on the aeroplane, especially as I assume at this stage we will still be using the basinet attachment.

Is there a lightweight travel buggy that people would recommend with a lay flat option or insert? (will baby still even be required to lay flat at this stage ???)

Obviously don't want to spend a fortune on something we wont really get much use out of.

Recommendations much appreciated :)

Baby zen yo-yo?

WhatALearningCurve · 17/12/2019 14:57

I took my little boy away at the same age and I bought this for the same reasons about the travel system

www.halfords.com/kids-zone/pushchairs-prams-accessories/pushchairs-prams-strollers/joie-mirus-scenic-stroller-dark-pewter

I absolutely love it. It lies flat and is either parent or world facing (only ever used it world facing but it's still a good feature).

I took it on two holidays - Mexico which was just a resort and Florida which was a lot of walking. Then I gave it to my mum who looks after my son for a day or two a week so she uses it then.

(Not gloating about the holidays - just showing it worked in different environments ha)

we had a hauck rapid, which folds easily, lies flat, big hood and basket.

Wasn't expensive so was fine to take on an aeroplane.

Lasted until ds didn't need it at 3.5 as well so was worth the £80 or so I paid for it.

I wouldn't buy a babyzen yoyo, for one thing all the kids I have ever seen in one, looking like they're hanging by their arse in the straps and are always slouched and for 2 are expensive so you may as well take your own pram!

hsegfiugseskufh · 17/12/2019 15:13

(I wouldn't bother with one that goes in hand luggage because more and more airlines will want you to put it in the hold anyway)

We used this for our dinky 7 week old when we recently went on holiday abroad. I also used a new born insert- but you won’t need one at five months.

One thing I would really recommend no matter what stroller you go for get a good sunshade for it...

This one is amazing and have used it
With both kids, it provides full shade over the front of a stroller when they are napping as well.

Namechanger23455 · 17/12/2019 15:22

Also at five months I doubt you will be using the bassinet feature on it still unless baby is tiny!

HorseMum91 · 17/12/2019 15:25

Thanks all. Will look in to all of these.
I don't think I'm going to worry about getting something with a specific newborn insert as baby will be boarderline really needing one by this stage. Most of them seem to accommodate from birth with their lay flat option anyway. If baby was still very fresh at the time of travelling I probably would, but doesn't seem necessary (although please correct me if I'm wrong!)
I quite like the look of the Silver Cross Jet.

I personally wouldn't buy a £275 stroller to throw in a plane hold Grin but it looks as though it will do all the things you want Smile

MsChatterbox · 17/12/2019 16:36

Honestly just get a basic stroller for £30. My son refused to lay flat at 5 months so he was upright anyway (still slightly reclined). So long as they can support their head it will be fine for just on holiday!

Namechanger23455 · 17/12/2019 18:26

I wouldn’t waste the £ to be honest as others said £250 for something being chucked in the planes hold 🙈🙈 go for a cheaper version

MummaGiles · 17/12/2019 18:30

At five months you’re likely to have ditched the bassinet. There’s a lot of umbrella buggies that are either from birth or 4 months. They will honestly be fine by then.

MummaGiles · 17/12/2019 18:31

(We got an uppababy g-luxe but I’m not sure they’re available anymore unless second hand)

anonymouse · 17/12/2019 18:46

Is there the option to hire on holiday? We found a rental company that worked with our hotel. We hired a baby jogger city mini and a bouncer for £50ish for the week. Delivered & picked up from our hotel. Used a carrier at the airport. DS was 6 months then.

spurlingpipe · 17/12/2019 18:47

I bought a Joie Nitro (LX I think) for ds1.
4 years of constant use later it's on it's third child and still going strong.
And it only costs £100

NuffingChora · 17/12/2019 18:59

If you think you’ll get the use out of it it’s hard to beat the babyzen yo-yo, and it’s so ubiquitous that lots of the airlines recognise it and let it on without a second glance. Noticed the Micralite pro-fold recently though which lays flat from birth and is also cabin approved, and it’s bit cheaper.

PixelLily · 17/12/2019 19:05

We have a Silver cross Jet and love it - usable from birth, has a great sunshade, lighter and cheaper than the yo-yo. We've taken it in the hold on 7 flights now and had no problems at all.

PixelLily · 17/12/2019 19:06

Sorry, meant to say on board as cabin baggage, not in the hold Confused

Whattodowithaminute · 17/12/2019 20:14

There are loads of options but I’d think about the practicalities more than light weight at this age-if you're going somewhere hot/warm
Sunshade
Ability to sleep/nap in buggy/pram will fundamentally effect how you holiday.

You don’t say what main travel system that you are going for.

It may make sense to invest in something like the yo-yo/armadillo flip which will last you a longtime; double up as the buggy for the car/nursery drop off... you’d probably pick one up second hand with this amount of time.

I have a yo-yo but wouldn’t love it for such a young baby though-at that age we took our bugaboo to gate and put it in a travel bag for protection. Baby could nap/sleep while we were by pool /dinner and safely covered from sun without needing snoozeshade type cover.

HorseMum91 · 17/12/2019 21:13

Thanks all for your suggestions.

I know it’s still quite early to be thinking about it but I’d like to have an idea as to what to get in case it goes down in Jan sales.

Main travel system is icandy cerium so certainly don’t want that getting thrown around in the hold.
