Getting rid of the dummy

My DS is 14 months and has a dummy sometimes during the day (he has one at home at weekends when he's particularly sad/cross, but at nursery during the week he doesn't), and for naps and at night.

After Christmas we are going to get rid of it completely during the day (just going cold turkey and giving him a cuddly instead when he's upset).

Is it a good idea to do naps & nights at the same time, or should I wait until he's a bit older and can understand something like a special new toy, the 'dummy fairy' or being 'too big' for them? I don't think he'd get anything like that now, so it would have to be some version of going cold turkey/using another comforter.

How many sleepless nights are we looking at Wink?

From 1 we had dummies are just for sleep time without any trouble.

Thanks Selfsettling3. Have you got rid of them completely since then?

Yes but not until she was much older, about 2 1/2 when she said the dummy fairy could come if she brought some make up. I went straight to Superdrug and bought some fairies too. A few late night and then she was fine until a year later when she started to asked them when her sister was born. I just told her we didn’t have any and she was fine.
