Dry socket misery

I know this isn't baby related, but.....
I had a tooth pulled on the 11th. I developed dry socket immediately and went back in on the 13th. The dentist said because of the abscess I had under the tooth, it caused the dry socket. He gave me antibiotics prescription, but no pain relief 😭.
The prescription wasnt stamped so I've had to run around all weekend, and call 111 repeatedly so get my amoxicillin sorted. Finally getting it today thank god. The issue I have now is, I'm still in excruciating pain, and packed wound is starting to smell. Is this normal? I dont wanna breathe on my baby for fear of killing him lol. Anyone that's had this before I'd be so grateful of some advice/insight. I dont know what's normal and what's not. The dentist said very little at both visits, which lead to me rinsing my mouth after the origional extraction, probably causing all of this!!!
Thank u in advance to anyone who can help.
Smile

I agree. This thread has become more useful in one morning that googles been all week!! Not breast feeding anymore, thank God. Or I'd of been really limited on what pain killers I'd be able to take.
Baby is awake now, I've demanded my useless other half take care of him while I get my self to chemist and emergency dentist if possible. Failing that, it will be a 9am phone call. Although weirdly enough, the puss feels like its lessened. Maybe I've sucked it all out, disgusting I know lol. As I said my breathe is wonderful lol.
I do have a course of metronidazole in the cupboard from a previous infection that I managed without using them. So that's handy.
I'm gonna head out now, need to stock up on ibuprofen, get some corsodyl mouth wash and gel hopefully. And fingers crossed a syringe, failing that I will try the calpol one.
Can I just ask, did I cause the septic socket or was that the abscess under the tooth not being cleaned out properly?

Can I just add, I'm only 32. But at this present moment I look about 60.
This whole nightmare has aged me dramatically lol. Cant wait to feel better so I can get my self and my house back in order.

God OP it is the absolute worst pain in the world. It's been a number of years since I had my dry socket - probably 15 years ago and I remember being in work with the most unsympathetic work colleagues - I ran out of painkillers and had to go to boots - I remember them getting me in trouble with our boss for leaving the office. Horrible toxic work place.

I ended up at emergency dentist who packed it and then I had to ride it out.

Don't use anything that may aggravate it - don't smoke - use a straw etc I remember living alone and feeling so out of my depth on how to cope. At the time I lived in professional shared accommodation and it was pretty isolating awful house - the guy upstairs smoked a lot of weed and I felt like asking him to make me something to numb the pain! And I was teetotal!

Good luck with it

Normally if you've got an abscess removal of the source of infection (the tooth) clears it up, any remaining infection your immune system fights off

In your case for whatever reason it hasnt, maybe some food got stuck in there that type of thing. It would be worth the dentist taking an x-ray to make sure there's nothing left in the socket

It won't be something you've caused, just one of those things. Your mouths a naturally dirty environment really, and wounds do get infected.

Smoking can cause a dry socket/infected socket, that's about it.

Ok so update.....
I've doubled my antibiotics all day, and I think they may have kicked in. I was throwing pain killers down my neck so fast I was losing track of how many I was taking. Now I'm forgetting to take them, so the pain must be subsiding. I got the corsodyl and gave it a good rinse, with a calpol syringe lol. But it worked, that's the main thing.
The top layer of packing has come out but theres still a lot more in there. When I press my tongue on it now, the amount of puss that comes out is a lot less. I'm also doing salt water rinses very regularly.
All in all, touch wood, I have improved. Nights r usually the worst so that's the real test. But clearly the answer to this, in my case, was antibiotics. And lots and lots of pain killers lol.
Thank u to everyone for your help, and kind words. U r all stars 🌟 xxx

You can get clove oil from Holland and Barrett I think. Also, as hard as it is, stop pressing your tongue on it. That's how I caused mine in the first place
