Coats for wriggly babies!

I know it seems trivial, but how on earth does anyone get a coat on a baby?! We had some he has now grown out of that he never wore as we just couldn't get him in them. We resorted to buying a thick cardigan in the size up so it's got more stretch in the sleeves, which is fine, but now it's getting colder I feel like he should be in a proper coat? DS is 7. 5 months and very wriggly, crawling and standing. He fights us when putting him in any clothes, and he's getting so big and strong its becoming quite a thing!! 😂

Before I waste more money on coats he won't wear, anyone got any suggestions on the type to try, alternatives or tips in getting his arms in? All the coats I've tried just seem to have no give in the arms and are so padded I can't get him in when he's doing somersaults!!

Mine never had coats till they were walking. Before that it was a combination of zip up hoodies and a Tuppence and Crumble star blanket plus the buggy cover.

On really cold days I'd use a snowsuit.

niclw · 14/12/2019 19:41

I second the star blanket from tuppence and crumble. My ds lived in his last winter and everyone commented d on how much easier it looked. Ive got another one for this year although he is a little old for it as he would rather walk if possible.

Pipanchew2 · 14/12/2019 19:45

If you are getting snow suit try and get a double zip (one on each leg) a bit easier than ones with single zip up the middle

Hand knitted cardigans, a star wrap and blankets for the pram

mynameiscalypso · 14/12/2019 19:49

God yeah, putting a baby in a coat is probably my least favourite part of parenting. We tend to go with layers and blankets although I'm v disappointed as I bought DS a coat that matches mine and I quite wanted us to be twins!

Fantababy · 14/12/2019 19:51

Is it the rule that you must specify 'the star blanket from Tuppence and Crumble'? Not just 'a wrap'. Every post I've seen mentioning such a thing ensures we all know it's 'from tuppence and crumble'. I take it it's expensive?

DappledThings · 14/12/2019 19:57

Fantababy Ha ha not at all. But the T&C one is the only one I've ever seen so just being clear about the specific item. I wouldn't say it's a wrap, it is a blanket with arms and legs. If there are other brands I'm sure they do just as well

Mayvis · 14/12/2019 19:59

I always put mine in a gilet at that age and as a young toddler, mine didn't like having their arms constrained.

spurlingpipe · 14/12/2019 20:05

We got gifted those bloody tuppence and crumble wraps for our twins and they were useless.
They just wouldn't keep their arms in them long enough for me to strap them into the buggy or car seat.

With baby on your lap crunch one sleeve of the coat over your hand so the wrist is over your wrist and your hand is coming out the shoulder.
Grab baby's hand and pull the sleeve over their arm then pin that arm to your torso.
Repeat scrunch and pull with other arm.

It helps if you grow an extra 2 or 3 arms as well.

Kcoffecakebubs · 14/12/2019 20:18

@spurlingpipe- **It helps if you grow an extra 2 or 3 arms as well. This!! 😂

Thanks everyone, I've just looked at the star blankets, but judging by the sizing he's too big, he's already in 12-18 month clothes.

I think I might try a gilet, or just get a coat that isn't as padded. We've got a snowsuit with the double zips, but then I've got to wrestle his legs in too!

For those of you with older babies, do they ever start cooperating with getting dressed? At the moment it's worse than the get ups in the night!

I can't imagine a wiggly, active baby staying in the star blanket for more than 30 seconds! Ours was redundant long before 7 months!

You need a coat with smooth/shiny (not cotton or fleece) material inside the sleeves.

troutknickers · 14/12/2019 20:30

I'm sorry to say this OP, but my ds is 16 months and he's still the same! Absolute bugger to get a coat on, pulls shoes off as soon as I've put them on etc Hmm it's very trying! Funnily enough I don't remember dd being quite this difficult, perhaps it's a boy thing!

Lunafortheloveogod · 14/12/2019 20:33

Bribery.. works for most coats, ds holds the piece of whatever (sometimes it’s a toy sometimes it’s food) in one hand and then we switch.. it limits the flailing a little Grin.

I’ll add we had a star wrap too he’s too big for the one we have now and I’m not sure if it’d be warm enough without a jumper under it.. then I’d be as well fighting the jacket on.

ChaiNashta · 14/12/2019 20:34

I haven't had this issue but I'm thinking maybe it's because I've always put my lot in fairly roomy zip-up puffa jackets that have smooth material inside like a pp said rather than a fitted/structured type coat with buttons.

ChanklyBore · 14/12/2019 20:36

Poncho, sounds like the way forward for you,

Mine didn’t have a coat until 2 plus years old, no need for one. And we are pretty outdoorsy, so it’s not because we didn’t go out!

LeeMiller · 14/12/2019 20:53

We had this problem and solved it with a fantastic cape (from Petit Bateau) that we could popper up around him.

Kcoffecakebubs · 14/12/2019 20:55

@troutknickers- I'm sensing DS is going this way!
I'm now on the lookout for a coat with shiny sleeves and Poncho's!

Pushchair foot muff. At 7 months, they aren’t out walking around playing in the cold. I don’t think either of mine had a coat until close to 2. Either worn in a sling under my/dh’s coat or in thick foot muff with jumper in pushchair with hat. Warm jumper and blanket in car seat.

cheekyboysdinomad · 03/12/2020 11:52

We had the exact same problem with our now 7 year old (until he was about 2) and then our 2 year old until very recently. I found a brand called Mosé Baby that does coats with zips in the sleeves, really made a difference from fighting with the little monkey every time I was trying to get ready to leave the house!

Thatwentbadly · 03/12/2020 17:26

Always use a generously sized coat.

Caspianberg · 04/12/2020 17:00

I put mine in just thick large cardigan with hat and scarf 99% of the time. Easier as can wear in car seat. Then he has a thick sheepskin footmuff and blanket in pram

We have a thinner fleece all in one for the sling, and a thick snowsuit he’s never worn yet
