Baby/toddler screaming at sleep time and in the morning

Hi everyone,

I have a nearly 16 month old boy (in my mind he is still my baby, hence the title 😂 but I know he is technically a toddler).

For the last maybe 3/4 weeks he has been getting really hysterical first thing in the morning. He is still bf first thing and just before bed. The routine has not changed since he was born - he wakes up whatever time (this does vary quite a lot sometimes), comes into my bed for a feed. We have a cuddle and we get up. But now when he comes off the breast he has a major meltdown. Throwing himself around, crying. Doesn't want to be held or cuddled but doesn't want to be on the floor. He rolls around rubbing his eyes which originally I thought meant he was still tired. But he does this regardless of how much sleep he has had. It could be 12 hours and he still does it. Sometimes it's worse when he has more sleep. This can go on for 15 mins until he calms down then he is right as rain! It really is a miserable start to our morning though and I don't understand why he is doing it?!

Second point is he has started getting hysterical again at nap time and bedtime. Doesn't matter how tired he is. Again it's very similar to the above - throwing himself backwards, rolling around, won't be help. Rubbing his face, hysterical crying. Again I just have to wait for him to come out of it and calm down while reassuring him and he is normally ok. But it's just such an unpleasant end to our day and start to our morning seeing him so upset. I really don't know what's causing it. Any ideas?!

Sorry that should say "won't be held"

I will also add that, again, he does it at bedtime when coming off the breast. This process seems to really upset him. Unfortunately I have to remove him after a while as it starts to get uncomfortable for me and he goes for a long time and he won't come off naturally at the moment. So I think this is probably the culprit :/ but saying that he hasn't had breast before nap time since he was about 6 months old and he is still hysterical then.
