Poop up baby's back

Can anybody shed any light on why this always happens?

DS is 6 months and any time he does a runny poo, it's all up his back with a vest ruined in the process 😩

He's 10.5kg and in size 4+ nappies which are the right size for his weight and we've tried a few different brands.

What are we doing wrong?!

It's just an age thing IME. They grow out of it. It seems to be worst when they are bigger so do bigger poos but are still mostly breastfed so their poo is essentially liquid. You just have to carry spare clothes around with you everywhere until it stops happening.

My DH was also disgusted by the idea of cloth nappies but I just got a couple and started using them, and suddenly it was not a big deal. He won't use them though but that's fine by me. I rarely use them now either, because I just find them too bulky and annoying, so it was a good job I didn't buy a whole set. Mind you maybe that would have meant I compared less.

4+ aren't any bigger than 4, they are just more absorbent. I have a 99th centile baby with a massive bum and I do have to buy nappies that are higher than his actual weight, so that they fit him better around the waist. I find after size 4 the actual size of the nappies doesn't really change but the waists get bigger. However for preventing leaks, smaller is better than bigger, as bigger ones can end up being too loose. I agree to try a brand with an elasticated back. I think Sainsbury's do them.

The 4+ ones in Aldi are 9-20kg whereas the size 4 are 8-15kg and are definitely a bit bigger. The size 4 left him with indentation marks on his legs but the 4+ seem more comfortable.

I think I might get a few cloth nappies just for poops!

Thank you for all of the responses. Though I don't wish poo on you all, it's nice to know it's not just us! 😩

I found a bit of Vanish OxyAction left to sit on stains before washing does wonders on the clothes!

Vanish spray for the vests ;)

Oh yes that's true with the 4s - I had forgotten that, DS2 was in between for a while. Try the 5s, even though they only start at 12kg or something. He's been in them for ages and only hit 12kg in the last month or so. He actually fits better in a 6 in Pampers Baby Dry Shock

Yes definitely use cloth!
If you suspect cmpa do not replace dairy with soya because it has a similar protein structure, go for soya free oat or coconut replacements instead

Could it maybe be he needs bigger vests? To allow room for the nappy to expand? If the vest is too tight the poo has nowhere to go. Might be worth a try.

TokenGinger · 10/12/2019 22:11

The bigger vests is a great shout. He's still in the smaller vests so I'll definitely move those up and I'll have a search for some cloth nappies to use when he's due a poop.

Thank you everybody Smile

Pampers premium protection nappy pants are the best I've found, because they move so much and wriggle the ordinary nappies aren't made to move with them whereas nappy pants expand and retract
