13 Week Old with Frequent Diarrhoea

My 13 week old baby has had frequent diarrhoea for the last 10 days. He usually has a bowel movement once a day and since having diarrhoea, is now going 6/7 times a day. His nappy is very mucus-y and runny and is brown in colour.

He is fine in himself and feeding normally. Hasn’t had any sickness or fever. The diarrhoea usually occurs within 60-90 mins of feeding. Overnight he tends to be okay with one bowel movement. It seems like it all starts up once he’s had his first feed of the day.

Visited GP last week who could not shed any light or offer any reassurance. He has sent off a stool sample to be tested and we are awaiting results.

Could teething cause diarrhoea and an increase in bowel movements? The only signs he’s showing is dribbling but I wouldn’t say it’s been any worse than when he first started dribbling around 9 weeks. No red cheeks, red/swollen gums or irritability.

Could it be lactose intolerance? Would it develop this late on?

Any other suggestions? I am giving him Dioralyte 3 times per day on GP’s recommendation. Can post a picture of one of his nappies if helps.

I‘m just concerned it’s been going on for 10 days with no improvement.

Any suggestions / advice extremely welcome.

Is he breast or bottle fed?

lineandsinker · 09/12/2019 19:09

He is bottle-fed, @dementedpixie. Been on Hipp Organic since he was 4 days old.

Bump.

We are 13 days and still going strong on the diarrhoea front. Stool sample results have come back as clear.

Also switched him to Aptamil Lactose Free 3 days ago on advice of a health visitor friend.

My actual health visitor and my GP have said to take him to A&E - GP won’t run any further tests or refer to paeds - but I think that’s such a waste of resources! Just feel like the medical professional are taking the easy route out.

Has the lactose free helped at all?

Is he miserable, sick, windy or generally restless? Does he cry a lot?
Cows milk protein allergy CMPA can be a cause. You can try an Extensively hydrolised protein formula (similar is probably cheapest but most brands make them, ask at pharmacy), this is available of prescription. If this doesn't work. An aminio acid formula would be recommended, nutramigen puraminois an example. These formulas are very expensive and are available on prescription until a child's first birthday . Visit your go and enquire about CMPA. It is worth mentioning soya milks may cause the same reaction as the protein chains in cows milk and soya are similar so an allergy to one may also trigger a reaction to another. For this reason one if the formulas already mentioned would be a good ideas to try.

*similac not similar. Almost all brands sell them inc aptamil and sma.

Thanks @dementedpixie @GlamGiraffe.

He’s still having diarrhoea on the Aptamil but not so frequent - we are down to 3/4 times a day from 7 which is positive. However, it’s still diarrhoea each time and now army green colour to boot (though I’m putting this down to the iron sulphate in the Apatmil which the Hipp Organic doesn’t contain).

He was very windy from birth until about 10 weeks but this has settled down significantly. His bowel is very noisy and makes lots of noise after feeding. He passes wind a lot too. He’s still possetting a lot after feeds but has done since birth.

Thank you for the formula suggestions. Will give him the weekend on the Aptamil to see if the diarrhoea settles down further but will try a different formula next week and also take back to GP regarding the CMPA. I will not resort to A&E!
