Advice on a cold with a 2 month old

Hi,

I've woken up to my night feed to discover I have a sore throat and a sniffy nose and to my horror my two and a half month old daughter seems the same (I don't know about the throat but she has a sniffly nose and sneezed during changing).

I've given her a 2.5ml dose of calpol before her feed.

I'm just wondering, if she continues to show signs of a cold, do I carry on giving her doses of calpol during the day (according to the box on times 4-6 hours and whatever the limited amount of doses in a day is) or is this a little drastic for the beginnings of a cold?

I'm just wary of giving her too much medicine at such a young age but obviously want what's best for her and for her to get better. I know she's allowed calpol at this age but because she's only just gotten to that stage of being allowed it I think I'm just worrying too much or something.

I was kind of hoping that the power of breastmilk would prevent her getting ill but I guess nothing stops the cold!

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Emma

I personally wouldn’t give calpol just for a cold but if they seem out of sorts, have a temp or are unsettled I would.
Saline drops (or squirt some breast milk up there) for their nose really help them breathe if they get bunged up, the snot sucky things and Snuffle babe although I think that’s allowed from 3 months.
Hope she gets better soon

I am using calpol for my 4.5 month olds cold as he has a slight temperature and is really grumpy. Also using snugglebabes nasal drops. And I’m using a calpol plug in that seems to be helping too. Awful seeing them with a cold. And I’ve got the same cold as baby so we are snotty together !

Hope you both feel better soon.

saline drops and a snot sucker are brilliant. Also, a calpol vapour plug-in for your bedroom.

Hope you both feel better soonThanks

Aww poor thing, it's horrible seeing them with a cold when they're tiny. DS had one at 8 weeks that we had to out off his jabs for. I think all I did was diffuse snufflebabe vapour oil around him, snot sucker and saline spray for his nose. I wouldnt give calpol unless there's a temperature generally.

The calpol plug in is great and helped for his next cold at 14 weeks! But I think it can only be used from 3 months

My 8 week old daughter has just had cold too.
I have bought the Braun nasal suction machine, it is brilliant. When the get really snotty and snuffly I use it.
I’ve been a nanny for over 24 years and wish I had one before.

Snot sucker. A plug in to help her breath

Not calpol. Definitely not for a 2 month old.
Isnt calpol for over 3 months old?
If she gets a temperature its recommended you get a drs appointment straight away because she is so young.

Nasal spray and nasal drops.

The calpol plug in cant be used before 3 months.

Calpol can be used at 2 months but only if maybe wasnt early and isnt underweight.

Spam88 · 09/12/2019 13:19

I thought calpol could only be used under 3 months for the jabs?

It's just saline drops really, and you can get snot sucker things. Anything mentholated/eucalyptus is top harsh on their airways at that age.
