Flu vaccine

Just looking for people opinions on flu vaccine for 2-3 year olds. I'm in two minds on whether to make an appointment for my little girl as I've seen a lot of people saying bad things about it. Hadn't even heard of it until it was advertised on tv ? Just wondering what's other people's experiences are

DD2 had it a few weeks ago and was absolutely fine.

DogCatHat · 07/12/2019 17:20

DD had it and had no side effects. I had flu a couple of years ago and felt like I was dying. I don't want to it my kids through that if it can be avoided.

BowiesJumper · 07/12/2019 17:22

My son had it last year and this and was fine both times.
Flu kills so why not get the vaccine?

My 4 year old had the flu vaccine and has been really ill. He won't be having it next year

Weedinosaurus · 07/12/2019 17:23

Hmmm get a vaccine to stop a potentially life threatening illness or don’t bother... I know what I’m doing.

Weedinosaurus · 07/12/2019 17:24

@letmepeeinpeace
The flu vaccine is very, very unlikely to be the cause of the illness.

RhymingRabbit3 · 07/12/2019 17:31

There have been at least 3 threads on this across the boards already.

Yes you should give them the vaccine, and have it yourself if eligible.

No the vaccine cannot give them flu. There may be mild side effects such as a runny nose. These are MUCH less severe than having flu.

letmepeeinpeace · 07/12/2019 17:33

The hospital agreed. None of my other children have it. I tried it with the youngest and it's affected him very badly. It's a live vaccine so can cause side effects

Helbelle17 · 07/12/2019 17:37

My dd is 2.5 and has had it this year. She was absolutely fine.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 07/12/2019 17:41

8-month-old and 2-year-old had it 2 weeks ago. Both were fine. Several kids in our local area died from the flu last year (including kids with no underlying medical issues). I can’t understand why anyone would take the chance, tbh. 100% vaccinate.

Waffles80 · 07/12/2019 17:46

Oh FFS.

There are eleventy billion threads on here, each sharing the views of random strangers.

Why don’t you look up this information from a reputable source such as the NHS website and make an informed decision.

DanielleMcGivern · 07/12/2019 18:42

@Waffles80 if you don't like the post then don't come on and comment, no need for your cheek. It's a simple question. I've read the nhs website but there's stuff there that others don't tell you. For example a family member had constant nose bleeds after having it and was hospitalised for being so ill. Thank for you opinion though 👍🏻

Correlation doesn’t equal causation.

And it’s the very fact that I do not like the post that leads me to comment.

newbingepisodes · 07/12/2019 19:45

Do you know anyone of the following:
Elderly person
Young baby
Chemotherapy patient
Cancer patient
Immunosuppressed patient
Pregnant lady
Someone in hospital
Anyone with significant health issues

Children are super spreaders. You (assuming you are generally fit and well) might get flu and be ok in a few days, same with your kid. However, if your kid gives it to one of the above, it has a high chance of killing them.

Harrysmummy246 · 07/12/2019 20:01

2.5 yo ds had it, not even a moment of hesitation

I've tried to get one at the pharmacy, I had a slight cold so they wouldn't do it

Friends have just had flu. Very healthy but 4 days in bed.

OP: you seem determined that you are right and don't want to hear people with opposing views, so why start the thread?

I will try again to have it,soon, as MIL is with us over xmas and has major health issues.

2beautifulbabs · 07/12/2019 20:05

DS has his in October and had no effects I'll do it again for him just a shame they have to be 2 years old as my DD is too young for protection against the flu it's not nice to get it and can be deadly for babies young children and elderly

Waffles80 · 07/12/2019 20:36

What the OP was hoping for, in line with anyone else who posts Anti-Vax nonsense, was a raft of posters frothing at the mouth citing “research” they “read on a blog” which inconclusively proves that ALL vaccines turn your skin blue, make your internal organs liquify and seep out of your ear-holes and were responsible for the deaths of Lady Di / Shergar / Elvis.

Whereas those of sound mind know that vaccines save fucking millions of lives worldwide and we should all thank our fucking lucky stars that they exist.

modgepodge · 07/12/2019 21:05

I had it, the next day I broke my leg so I won’t be having it again.

Oh no, wait, the two events weren’t related.

modgepodge · 07/12/2019 21:08

Harrysmummy - I’m surprised they wouldn’t give it to you with a slight cold. Did you have a temperature? My (7 month old) had a cough when she had it, the nurse took her temperature and as it wasn’t raised said it was fine to give. Definitely go again, and maybe try a second pharmacy if they refuse!

Harrysmummy246 · 07/12/2019 21:32

I will be doing don't worry @modgepodge

Just fell down the priority list.

And no, they really wouldn't, with the tag end of a cold (really that was all!)

Love your correlation/ causation there with the broken leg (although eek!)

LilQueenie · 07/12/2019 21:39

look up the effectiveness of the vaccine for this year. some years its more effective than others as there are several strains and its guess work which one is going to hit you if it hits you. Also has there been any problems with other vaccines your child has had. If you are going to go ahead I would recommend avoiding those who are immune compromised for a couple weeks afterwards to avoid the shedding problem for them.

Harrysmummy246 · 08/12/2019 21:08

That information isn't available yet for this season- nobody has a crystal ball and it's not worth waiting to find out that figure but risk getting the flu
