Second baby - forgotten everything newborn related!

Had my second baby at the weekend. Have literally forgotten everything.

He was latching on well for first few days but now my milk has come in seems:

  • unsettled
  • difficult to latch
  • feeding every hour
  • has blisters on lips
  • sleeping all day, awake at night
  • has hiccups or burps after feeding

Nappy output is good though, with several wet and dirty nappies a day (which is getting lighter in colour).

Thinking possible tongue tie affecting taking on milk and mixed up day and night?

What should I be doing? Persevering until midwife comes Friday for check, or calling them now to come out?

Should I be waking him in the day so he'll go his longer stretches at night?

Or should I just respond to his pattern and work around him?

Why do I sound like a FTM with a PFB 😂

Congratulations!

My first is only 9 weeks and to be honest I have blanked out a lot of the first few days, so I am absolutely not an expert! But I would say definitely ask the midwives to come sooner - 2 days is a long time for you both to be struggling at this point. Or is there a local breastfeeding support service - maybe check with your local children's centre or similar to see what there is near you. Or local La Leche League people.

Don't feel that you have to be happy with whatever advice/ support you get - if the midwife sees you and says everything's fine, that's great, but they are not the be all and end all of breastfeeding knowledge. Don't feel bad about trying other sources of support if things still don't feel right.

I'm not sure there's anything you can do to get him to work out day/ night any quicker - he'll get there eventually, or maybe it's just that we get used to it Grin

Enjoy your cuddles Flowers

Ring your midwife and get them out tomorrow.

Honestly a lot of it sounds like classic new born.

  • unsettled - at a few days old your baby is nolonger tired out from birth
  • difficult to latch - your both learning a new skill, you may have done it before but it’s a new baby
  • feeding every hour - just building supply and your baby had a lot of growing to do and need for comfort. Your baby’s stomach is the size of a walnut, they need a lot of milk to grow.
  • has blisters on lips - sucking blister, just a result of lots of feeding which is what babies do.
  • has hiccups or burps after feeding - immature digestive system thats not used to food
  • confused days, babies have to feed overnight as that is when your body produces the hormone need to make more milk. They also used to being rocked to sleep during the day in the womb when you were moving round. Get him as much day light as possible.
