Potty training 26mo DS - he gets it, but still having accidents

We've been potty training DS for about 5 weeks now - a la Cod - stickers, sweets, excited praise, diggers etc

DS is definitely getting it - uses the potty of his own volition (even when in the middle of playing), will poo in the potty (occasionally), we've even had some accident free days. But in general we're getting two or three accidents a day.

We don't want to give up, because he can do it. But carrying 3 changes of clothes around all the time is getting tedious! Any suggestions?

No suggestions, i'm afraid...I would probably stop TBH. Yes, he can do it, but seemingly only when he wants to, or remembers, or isn't distracted etc. I would probably try again in a month or two... with the sticker charts and Smarties

But his pants are so cute! Do we really need to give up?

I know all about the carrying of extra extra clothing...in fact, have only just begun leaving excess baggage behind...16 months later! Am of the opinion that nappies are far easier to deal with when out and about. And I know I couldn't have dealt with poo accidents-in-knickers...

it is great getting them out of nappies, the three accidents a day after 5 weeks would've weakened my determination considerably... in fact it did...I am still an "inept sod" as opposed to a graduate of cod's potty bootcamp.... and my ds is nearly 3 yrs and 4 months

cornflakegirl · 21/08/2007 21:39

Poo is fine - doesn't make his trousers soggy!

He had some nasty nappy rash before we moved to pants - we actually kind of fell into potty training from extended nappy-free time - so we don't really want to go back to nappies if we can avoid it...

aefondkiss - i'm glad you're embracing your ineptitude!

If you're happy and don't mind the frequent changes of clothes, and he's happy, then why not carry on, then? He might suddenly 'get it' as it were... or you might need another 16 months

cornflakegirl · 21/08/2007 22:04

16 months wasn't exactly the encouragement I was looking for!

To be fair, It's been 16m on and off... she can go for weeks without an accident and then has little 'relapses'. Im still not brave enough to leave the house with no clean pants, though!

Have you tried leaving pants OFF, when one of my ds's was younger as soon as i put pants on him, he had an accident.

Pants give them the feeling of being secure again, like having a nappy on. I just used to put jogging bottoms on, with no pants and that stopped accidents.

Cammondoe style!!!!!

DOn't give up! Especially if he's going without being prompted. I'm on week 2 with my ds (30 months). We had an accident free day on Monday and I thought I'd cracked it but now we seem to be going backwards with 3 accidents in a row today. He was previously running to the pot when he needed to go but today he is just saying 'me doing wee-wees' -if I don't tell him to go and sit on the pot he just does it on the floor!! Argghh! However, I know he can do it but I guess it's gonna take a bit of time (dd1 was done in a day) - I definately don't want to go back to sitting on the pot every half hour when he is now capable of going without prompting. Btw I also have dd2 (3 months)in nappies so I guess I have more incentive to battle on!!

jay11 - thanks for the encouragement! we had a bit of a disaster day yesterday - dh (who is a sahd) took him to a friends to play in the morning - and he wet himself 4 times - I had to go and buy some more cheap trousers at lunchtime because we had completely run out (God bless Asda!).

law3 - I don't think it's a pants thing - in fact it seems to be almost completely at random. Sometimes when he's busy doing something he'll remember to use his potty, other times we'll have just asked him if he needs to go, and he'll wee on the floor!

we got to the end of the packet of sweeties this morning - dh suggested that we should stop using them - I definitely don't think he's ready for that!

How old is he, i have read the thread, but cant see it mentioned?

law3 · 24/08/2007 11:01

der!!! says 26 months at the top!!

He is old enough, you seem to be doing all the right things, give it a few weeks and im sure it will all fall into place. Dont go back to nappies, youve come so far!!

cornflakegirl · 26/08/2007 21:20

law3 - thanks for the encouragement!

we've had a couple of good days. yesterday was accident-free - including two 1 hour car trips (although no spontaneous trips to the loo, and he didn't do any poos).

today - we had one accident (during dinner, despite having sat on the potty for about 15 minutes beforehand of his own volition!) - but he did do a poo on the potty - having told me he needed a wee - but I was so proud anyway!
