Newborn first cold and worried mum. What do I do?

I have a 2 years old and a 3 weeks old. The 2 y.o. has come back from nursery with a cold (a few days ago), lots of sneezing, coughing and mucus, you get it.

Now the baby has it and it's breaking my heart seeing her so congested. I tried the nasal drops and it's not working, she has lots of mucus in her throat and nose and now seems to have a phlegmy cough as well, no coughing fits but you can hear all the congestion.

I do have a high level of anxiety around health and cannot help but feel it could be something serious like pneumonia and she could choke. She can't sleep and I haven't slept in days, surviving on coffee at the moment.

What should I do? My first was a summer baby and didn't get a cold for ages, instead she's tiny. It makes me feel terrible when she struggles for air; she seems fine when on her tummy, but obviously cannot sleep like that.

She's happy sleeping on the side. Also feeding less but still same amount of poop (a lot) and wet nappies. So maybe not exactly less.

We had a nose sucker thing. Gross, but helps (gently) clear out the snot. Think it was called a 'nose frieda'. That and keeping them upright (eg sleeping in a sling on you rather than in cot or pram).

First colds are rough, but it will pass!

@Flumperama thanks, it's horrible when they are tiny Sad

Second the snot suckers they really work. Calpol plug in is excellent for helping with breathing- I plug it in all day and shut the door. It helps my daughter so much.

PS I know you're want to avoid doctor's waiting rooms with all the bugs going around but if you need reassurance don't be afraid to see your GP. It's so scary when they are tiny and ill

Give her a steam in the bathroom (shower on hot for a few minutes) a few times a day to clear her out. I have a big humidifier I run all night with snufflebabe oil in when my LO had a cold (which is always since he started nursery). Found it better than the calpol plug ins. All the cuddles and feeds.

And of course, dr if you're at all nervous :)

I second the drs OP it's always worth checking them over when they are that young

Also the plug ins are good but they are only
For babies over 3 months or 6 months

I remember when my DD got her first cold there wasn't a lot I could use for her some stuff is 3 months on wards but the snuffle suckers are amazing when used with the nasal spray well worth the money

You definitely need a snot ducker. Just got one for my 10 month old and it's a game changer.

We also use calpol plug in, snufflebabe on her chest and put a towel under mattress so she's sleeping at a bit of an angle

I also wouldn't hold back from checking her over at the doctors. They're always happy to put your mind at rest when the baby is so young

Managed to see the GP and they kindly saw her around 1h ago (luckily the waiting area was peactically empty). She has a common cold, but GP said it was a good idea just to be on the safe side.

Ordered snot sucking device and humidifier from amazon. Thanks everyone!!

Letting her sleep upright in a baby carrier on you (or better yet - another adult!) should enable both of you to get a bit of rest. Sleeping down is so hard when you’re that congested.

Poor baby... and poor you!
