So, how did YOU potty train your dd/ds?

following on from a certain thread it really amused me that Twiglett's potty training technique was seen as 'Bohemian' - thats me then as well - cos that's how I did it too - take the nappy off (in summer) and hope for the best - it works!

DD did it with dgs too!

Same as Coddy. Ds2 isn't totally dry yet, but hardly surprising as his cp gives him less sensitivity in that area.

Cold turkey with pants - naked didn't help us. It's certainly not bohmian - It;s recommended in loads of parenting bookes and articles!

Can't be bothered with night training - DS1 decided himself when he wasn't going to wear pullups at night (3 1/2) and I intend to let DS2 do the same.

Can't remember exactly.I think me and dp just decided one day to stop nappies. We left the potty in the room all the time but she would not sit on it,or if she did it was for about two seconds!.Then suddenly after no success dp said to dd Try and see if you can make you potty wet?.After that she did it every single time!

First day - no bottom half clothes on; in house all day; potty in same room close by; lots of reminders; stickers as a reward directly onto potty

Second day - loose fitting pants on; rest same; but less reminders

Third day: loose pants and trousers/skirt (?) on; moved potty to bathroom; less reminders; chocolate buttons introduced to try and comabt her not wanting to poo in potty

No wet accidents after end of day too fortunately.

I tried to potty train my first which was quite stressful for all concerned - constantly asking if he needed a wee, then having to deal with accidents (running around with a spray bottle of Dettox). He went onto be a child who wet the bed until he was 8 or 9 (don't know if it's connected, but wouldn't be surprised).

The next 3, I just left them to it: #2 and #3 gave up nappies (day and night) during their first term of nursery school, and #4 just before. No accidents from any of them.

I'm using this laid back approach with #5, who is 2.5y. She knows all about wees and poos, but still likes her nappies.

Just went from nappy to pants. Didn't do the no pants thing. After a week DH forgot to put a nappy on her at bedtime and as she was dry we just left them off from then on. All done very painlessly and at DD's instigation at 18 months. we'd had a potty around from about 14 months and a copy of DK's "Potty book for girls" but didn't make any attempt to get her to use it.

I just took his nappy off and put him in trousers and he just took himself to the potty, no accidents. He is a late trainer though (nearly 3) and i waited until i 'knew' he was completely ready. he WONT wear pants though

DD has special needs and she wears a nappy. But we have been taking her to the toilet at hourly interval for wee's and she has started to have a dry nappy and wee's on the pot/toilet

MeanBean · 28/09/2004 09:35

Did it in Summer and took a week off work to concentrate on it. No nappy, lots of reminders to sit on potty, loud rounds of applause and excitement when anything was deposited, "oh dear, oh dear" when she missed. Took the potty everywhere, including shopping. By the third day there were no accidents, by the fourth day she was dry.

I don't really understand what night training is though. It hasn't really happened for me - both mine (5 and 2) are very hit and miss - mostly miss at the moment - the laundry is endless!

Ds1 pretty much set his own pace. He spent for the first couple of hours just sitting on the potty. This was followed by playing in the house with no pants or trousers on. Next he asked for pants. By late afternoon he was asking to wear trousers too.

He still wears nappies at night and will probably continue to do so for a while yet.

Ds2 is 20 months old and goes to sit on the potty (still with his nappy on) whenever he needs a poo. I'm fairly sure though that he's not ready for actual potty-training yet.
