9-12 month Health visitor review

We have just gotten a letter through for our 10 month old son that the health visiting team will not be doing the 9-12 month review with him.

So now I just want to know if anyone else has experienced this?

And am I being ridiculous in feeling overwhelmed and worried that I might be missing something with him. We have no family around us (6 hour travel to the closest ones in a car and we don’t even have a car).

I’d like to point out that I love my health visitor but now I feel like this is the final person on the NHS who has let me down. I’m not from the UK so not seeing any health care professional from 6 weeks until after 2 years old doesn’t seem right to check up on developmental reviews.

I never had a health visitor come more than once. There was a family clinic I could walk to as often as I liked and they'd do the weighing and meauring bit. But I dont recall seeing them that much after the first few months. If there is something you are concerned about contact your GP.

I have always declined the reviews and had very little involvement with HV. If you are concerned about development I'm sure you can ring up and ask to meet them in a local children's centre.

Hi. I’m a first time mum and I really enjoyed our 12 month check. I wanted someone to check my son over and discuss how he was doing etc. It felt important to have someone else check how he was and for me to have that space to discuss how he and I were.

Do you have a weighing clinic that you attend nearby run by health visitors? Could you go there and ask for a check? Do you have any concerns or do you just want to chat things through with someone (like I did)

That does sound unusual, I thought it was a requirement in most areas for health visitors to offer a 9 - 12 month development check?

Have they sent a questionnaire about his development or anything like that for you to fill in?

EscapeTheOrdinary · 25/11/2019 03:20

they have drop in centres at health clinics where you can be seen by a health visitor or you should have their direct contact details on your baby book so you can contact them and see about arranging a check. I have attended 2 drop ins and they were no different to his at home checks.

Thank you for your replies.
The weigh clinics we were turned away from because they are under too much stress and aren’t worried about him.

@Biggie123 I guess I am just like you, just want to chat things through. Just that confirmation everything’s okay.

@ShadowSuperNova no we haven’t got the questionnaire. And like you I thought they had to provide it in our area, but apparently not.

Never had one with my DS don't expect to have one with my DD health visitors in my area are stretched and they only tend to help those who have issues or think somethings wrong

They usually send out a letter more like a guidance of milestones your DC should be achieving at that age and if they aren't or you have concerns to contact them to arrange them to come out and see you and DC

We are currently going through help now for my DS speech delay he's 2.8 years old

I would suggest if you have any concerns OP or just need reassurance give your health visitor a call

Google asq for child age. And scoring sheet. Run through questionnaire. Probably won't tell you anything you don't intuitively know

DappledThings · 25/11/2019 20:30

When DS was about 11 months I asked about this. They told me they weren't currently offering them.due to budget cuts. She asked if he had any teeth and was pulling himself up. I said no to both and she said it didn't really matter so that was that!

They might roll it up into the one-year jabs. They did that with our weaning appointment at the 16-week ones.

In our area we are sent the questionnaire but they only see babies they're concerned about (they saw mine actually as he was in the black for gross motor skills).

If you're worried, you can easily get the questionnaire online. Just Google ASQ 10 months. Even more usefully, if you search, you can also download their coding key so you can see how your baby does and what their 'score' is. That might be useful to reassure you. Or, if it's really low, at least you will have a reason to see the HV to get support!
