Cough getting worse with penicillin

Had a steroid prescribed for 1.5 yr old on Monday for croup. Didn't improve so took her to GP on Wednesday who prescribed another steroid after checking her ears and listening to her chest. Wednesday night, temperature shot up, became larthargic and floppy. Called 111, sent to A&E. They diagnosed tonsillitis and said the croup was a symptom of that. Prescribed penicillin, started the course on Wednesday night.

Toddler has improved in many ways and is sleeping well, but isn't really eating much and her cough is getting worse. It sounds quite dry. There's mixed advice about steam. NHS says no way, but other sites suggest that's purely because children have been accidentally scolded.

Any advice for me from more experienced parents then me? TIA

Sometimes the cough gets worse before it gets better. But it’s not still the croupy cough? If it is take her back to the go.

Steam you can do in bathroom with shower running hot sat on toilet seat but not obs over a hot bowl of water etc. Don’t sit for too long as it can be uncomfortable. Plenty fluids and rest but if she’s no better in a week take her back. If she’s not eating I wouldn’t worry but offer her things she likes and plenty fluids inc milk.

Yes, not the croup cough now but sounds like a dry, scratchy cough. I'll l get her in a steamy bathroom for a bit. Thank you

You can get some children's cough mixture for 1+ for dry coughs. Vicks rub can help and you can get plug ins with similar stuff in. Might a puffer help?

Use regular calpol/nurofen to control the fevers.

Monitor fluid intake and wet nappies. Be concerned if she's not drinking and no wet nappies.

Thanks all, she's definitely on the mend now. Cough is still bad but there's a lot of green snot coming out her nose so I think she's trying to dislodge that a lot of the time. Which is positive, and gross 😂

She's eating better - had three small meals today for the first time in a week and also drank several cups of water and watered down juice. Wet nappies are fine too. She's sleeping a lot and lacking energy but imagine that may be the penicillin and she's not floppy or larthargic anymore than God.

Phew. I'm 9 months pregnant and wasnt looking forward to giving birth while she was so unwell!
