Nappy rash in nursery

Hi all. DD is 1 and has been at nursery for a couple of months. She loves it and is very happy there, and I am also happy in general with the nursery and the staff. I just have one issue with recurring nappy rash as a result of not being changed quickly enough. Most days she has leaked through to her vest, which doesn't happen if she is changed quickly, only if she is left and then wees. I have mentioned this a few times, including this morning, but I think it is partly because DD is a contented little thing and she won't bat an eyelid to play and wander around with a poop in her pants. Anyone have any advice? I guess they normally change at specific times, but I have asked them to check her every 30 minutes or so. Not really sure what to do if it continues, do I speak to the manager? Or think about finding Childminder?

Don’t they have set times they change them? Our nursery changed every 2 hours I think whether they needed it or not, plus extra for poo obviously. They used way more nappies than I did in a day, and they rarely had a rash on my watch

Every half hour is extremely frequently. I’m not sure a childminder would be any happier about that than a nursery. Maybe look into changing nappy brands if it’s causing a rash? Or going up a size? I’m sure you can ask them to apply nappy cream at every change too.

They have set times, I think every 3 hours. Not too different to what we do at home, but she's never really had nappy rash when with me. I don't want them to change her every 30 minutes, just check if she is dirty, as her bowel movements clearly don't line up with the nappy schedule and they don't ever seem to notice.
@Caterina99 does your DC cry or complain with a dirty nappy? Mine doesn't, so they just don't seem to notice it is dirty.
They are using cream after every change now, and I was considering going up a size... Might order some larger ones too see if it makes any difference.

Poo smell is pretty obvious most of the time. It would concern me greatly if either:

  • no one was coming close enough to my child to identify that she had pooed
  • people were noticing and ignoring it
Also, if she's soaking the nappy to the extent it leaks, she's not being changed every three hours.

Put in a complaint.

We had exactly the same thing, and I was getting really concerned that not enough attention was being given (my LO does poo more frequently than most!). I raised it and the nursery said they themselves had taken to checking every 20 mins or so as they realised she pooed quite a lot, and didn’t really smell.

Turned out she was actually reacting badly to the wipes they use. We’ve given our own ones and she’s had no rashes since. Just something to bare in mind.

We do have a lot more leaks on to clothes than we do at home, though I find they don’t do nappies up as tight as I would!

No at age 1 they didn’t care either, but you could usually smell it lol.

My DS was extremely prone to nappy rash, I had to make sure he was fully dry after each change and then put cream on. Every change.

Now I’ve had DD, I could give her a quick wipe and never use cream and she’s totally fine. She’s just not as sensitive.

I guess if my DD is the norm, and your DD is more like my DS, they probably just aren’t taking enough care with the changes. Definitely spell it out to them that she needs a lot of cream on, and yes PP suggestion about the wipes is a possibility
