Conjunctivitis in babies question

I know speaking to a dr/pharmacist would be better than asking randomers on the internet but I can’t get to one at this moment.

Do they give out eye drops to babies if they have conjunctivitis? DD is 9 months old and I wasn’t sure if it warranted a drs appointment or just a trip to the pharmacist...

They are only needed if it doesn’t clear but after 2 weeks.

I took ds into the optician at 7 months, he said reactions are quite common so they try to avoid them as much as possible and to wait a week to see if it’d cleared up but if it got worse to bring him back and they’d prescribe them then. Ds’s cleared on day 4. Also advised me to wash comforter toys, sheets and play mats he’d likely rubbed his face on just incase.

Ds also got his first mini eye test, didn’t even think they’d be able to check eyes that young.

Obviously if you feel it’s bad or bothering her you can take her down.

My baby got conguntivitus at 1 week old! The doc took it seriously and we were sent for an emergency appointment at the hospital where we were given antibiotic eye drops. At 3 weeks old he got it in the other eye. Again taken very seriously and given eye drops and saw the consultant paediatrician. Cleared up quickly and he’s 4 months and it hadn’t returned. What I learnt is that they see it as a risk to a baby’s sight if left untreated.

I spoke to a pharmacist when my baby had conjunctivitis who said they couldn't advise anything for a baby under the age of 2 and I would need to see GP/OOH if I was concerned

If you take your (clean) pinky figure and rub gently on the spot between the edge of the eye and the nose, you can encourage baby's tear duct to flush the infection out.
A health visitor told me this on my third trip to the GP for medicated drops. Worked like a charm.

I took DD to GP for conjunctivitis and they prescribed eye drops, when I read the information leaflet it stated that pregnant women should not use them in the first 3 months of pregnancy as it could cause foetal abnormalities, also stated that breastfeeding women should not use them....I was breastfeeding and couldn't use them but I could use them on my baby 🤔 I decided against squirting them into my DD's eyes and used breast milk instead, cleared up completely in two days!

chloechloe · 21/11/2019 21:42

I was going to suggest breastmilk as well, it works really well.

Weleda also make calendula eyedrops which I’ve found work well.

Our DD2 used to get gunky eyes all the time and our Dr would prescribe eyedrops to use if it didn’t clear up after the above two methods.

Pharmacist wouldn’t give anything for my DD under a year but the GP prescribed after a phone consultation without being worried about seeing her

Selfsettling3 · 21/11/2019 21:51

HayleyHaystack it’s only this serious in babies under a month old.
