Quitting work while on mat leave claiming uc

If i wanted to hand my notice in before my maternity leave is over would my universal credit stop?
I get £6.27 so just above minimum wage for my age for 20 hrs a week and being a single mum I can't find any child care in my area. They're all full. As I'm handing in my notice would I be sanctioned and have my uc stop for 6 weeks or would I be OK. I know they have to pay me mat leave until my end date but I only get 80% of my wages each month and it doesn't even cover my rent. Has anyone handed in their notice while on uc and maternity leave and still get uc?

The £6.27 is hourly rate which is due to go up now I'm 21

They can sanction you for 12 weeks if you don't have a good enough reason for quitting and you might not get any UC in that time.

You do not have to be in work until the child is 3 years old. I would call up and ask their advice. Be honest and say you cannot find appropriate childcare in your area and will need to stay home with the baby.

As op says they will sanction you and you won’t be able to apply for UC for 12 weeks after your quit date.

Best thing to do is to get in touch with your local job center and ask for their advice on what you should do.

Are you currently getting UC? For the top ups? It should cover your rent I would think. It used to be tax credits which was paid at the same time as maternity pay, but switched to UC.

Can they sanction me even if I'm forced to quit?

@Diddybump2019 as in constructive dismissal or forced by your circumstances?

MustardScreams · 15/11/2019 08:38

If you’re forced then it’s constructive dismissal. How long have you been at work for?

MustardScreams · 15/11/2019 08:38

Forced by work I mean, not your situation.
