How soon did you go out with new baby?

I know it will vary depending on birth etc. But had my second dc three days ago and everything was straightforward no complications etc. Already have Ds one and so today we headed out to the park for a walk.
The midwife arrived early and was at the door as we arrived back. She seemed really quite shocked we'd been out and gave me a bit of telling off (lightheartedly and not something I'm upset/offended by at all).

It just made me curious as to how soon in general people are out and about after birth. I can't quite remember with Ds but I think it was about a week.
Dd was well wrapped up, it's quite chilly here. But she didn't seem concerned about the baby being out at all, just that I should be resting.

First baby three days after the birth but I had a third degree tear so could hardly walk. Second baby just flew out and I was in Costa the next day and a soft play party the day after that!

katewhinesalot · 14/11/2019 18:10

How can you rest with a toddler?

Do as much fun things as you want to and feel able to.

Of course insist on help for the more boring bits... Grin

I had ds3 at 6 am and picked dc 1 and 2 from school...

We went out the next day to the hospital and supermarket.

But even jokingly she shouldn't tell you off. To someone who is hormonal and struggling it could make them too scared to leave the house which should be encouraged if they feel ready.

MustardScreams · 14/11/2019 18:12

Dd was a pretty easy birth, 2nd degree tear and some grazes, but they weren’t debilitating.

I went sofa shopping with her when she was about 2 days old. No idea what I was thinking because I was still trying to establish breastfeeding, so spent most of the time sitting on the sofas feeding her Grin

I can imagine if I’d had a rougher birth I’d want a good week or more to just get my head back together before I ventured out.

NuffingChora · 14/11/2019 18:12

C-section on Friday, soft play/cafe on Sunday with DH and toddler. Felt fine.

WishUponAStar88 · 14/11/2019 18:13

With both mine I was out and about as soon as we were home from hospital. With the second in parks/ soft plays within a few days. Much easier to have a happy toddler if they’ve had a run around/ park trip!

Lunafortheloveogod · 14/11/2019 18:17

The same night I was discharged, Tesco run for tiny baby clothes and bigger pads for me. Wasn’t exactly exciting but it was stuff I needed and wasn’t sure about dp picking the right thing (maternity pads aren’t in the sanitary bit in ours). I had stitches up onto my bum but I was struggling to walk

Stayed in the next day and went out the day after. As long as you’re not physically in pain from walking, sitting made me worse really, and you’re not mountain climbing there’s no need for a lecture.

Frazzled2207 · 14/11/2019 18:17

I had mine in summer and weather was good -
Pretty sure I was out pushing the pram gently the day after I got home from hospital on both occasions. I hate being stuck in the house though. Get cabin fever. And need exercises

maternity123qwe · 14/11/2019 18:19

DS on day 2 on being home- as DSS had a footie match, DD (10 weeks old) we did an Asda shop on the way home from hospital and my DS had a nursery party the next day so we went to that.
Both labours I had spinal and stitches, the 2nd a retained placenta so he surgery after. So both I was in hospital overnight after the birth.
With my 2nd my body felt like it had been run over (thanks to the Brutual retained placenta surgery) so the nursery party was a struggle

tisonlymeagain · 14/11/2019 18:20

Same day I think. If you're feeling fine, go for it! I remember a similar issue with a midwife that turned up to the house when my DD was about 5 days old. I had gone out for lunch with friends and she turned up unannounced. She was so rude to my DH and incredulous that I may have deigned to set foot outside the house!

Minai · 14/11/2019 18:21

Ds1 I went for a very short walk to the shop when he was 4 days old but probably didn’t really leave the house properly for about 2 weeks but that’s only because I was in horrendous pain and couldn’t walk properly.

Ds2 we went out straight away as I was fine. I can’t see why you’d have to stay in?! I know it’s getting cold but as long as the baby is wrapped up appropriately and is healthy I can’t see why you wouldn’t be able to go out. Fresh air is good for all of you!

itllneverfitinthecar · 14/11/2019 18:22

With my second, we were out to meet friends after 24 hours. We left a note on the door for the midwife Grin

LL83 · 14/11/2019 18:27

A walk with a one year old seems much easier than playing in the house.

Baby 1 was in hospital for 5 days, but we went out day after we got home. Baby 2 day 3 after being in hospital for 2 days.

For me being out for an hour or two each day was fun and enjoyable. I would feel cooped up at home, though I understand that is enjoyable for others.

SuperSimpleSnogs · 14/11/2019 18:30

5 days later to DS's hospital outpatients hearing test, and 2 days after that went shopping in nearest big city...and nearly fainted as I was severely anaemic after 3rd degree tear and PPH. Learnt my lesson and stayed in for a while after that! But it was my first child so I had the luxury of sitting on the sofa all day, I bet it's very different with other children to look after!

user1498572889 · 14/11/2019 18:31

Had my daughter on a Sunday. Was at the supermarket with three kids on the Wednesday. I think it totally depends on how you feel.

GirlOnIt · 14/11/2019 18:31

Glad I'm not the only one. I went to my grandparents yesterday, but was just from car to house and back. But really felt like some fresh air and exercise today.
Ds struggled with feeding a bit at first so I remember that being all consuming at the start, but Dd latched straight on and no problems at all so far.

Yes I'm not sure how much rest I can get with a one year old and newborn @katewhinesalot 😂

I went to the same day I had my last baby Blush

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 14/11/2019 18:34

Dc1 was an emcs & short NICU stay. We went to the botanical gardens when he was 6 days old.

Dc2 was an emcs but we got out of hospital the following day. The day after that we went out for lunch and then to Messy Church. We were back going to groups etc within the week.

firstimemamma · 14/11/2019 18:38

I spent the first 2 days home from hospital in bed and a further 2 a bit out of bed but mostly still in bed! Still hadn't left the house at all. On day 5 we ventured out to boots and a bf support group!

PsychosonicCindy · 14/11/2019 18:39

I went to a jumble sale with dd3 when she was 4 days old. Got a lot of pursed lips from the pensioners behind the stalls though!

FenellaMaxwell · 14/11/2019 18:43

We were released from hospital in the evening the day after DS was born, and went out the next morning, around the corner to a cafe for a coffee.

GirlOnIt · 14/11/2019 18:45

Yes that's how I feel @LL83. I very rarely stay in. And although it was cold it wasn't raining or particularly windy today so thought we should make the most of it.
And I kinda wanted to try out the pram.

I had a csection and was sat in a pub having a meal with my family when DD was 3 days old, it was the day after we brought her home and I was in bits. DM came over at my request and said going out would help me feel better (she also had a csection with her first) and it honestly did me the world of good.
