One year old - first tummy bug

I will start by saying I am not looking for advice online and we have already been to the GP. As a first time mum dealing for the first tummy bug I am just looking for others experiences on this.

Baby can't keep food down and has been having loos poos since Saturday. He has a bit of a cold as well and GP confirmed it's a bug, give him plenty to drink, not to worry about food intake and he'll be ok soon.
Baby is happy with (little) milk and keeps down few spoonfuls of yogurt/baby food. If given 'proper' food, he throws up. And he's sleeping more than usual, but he's happy and plays a lot.

Does it look like the norm to you and how long did it take to your children to recover?

My one year old took a full week to recover from first tummy bug.
Dr said to look out for loss of energy, high temperature or complete refusal of food. Dr also said try small snacks and actually said biscuits and even pom bears could help encourage them to drink.

Ah thanks Serabi, great tip giving biscuits. Doctor advised the same re:what to keep an eye to.
I just hoped he'd recover already given he's otherwise fine. But that's probably me being overly concerned!

I would just feed whatever you think he will tolerate, lots of cuddles and fresh air. I also washed all sheets and towels on hot wash with antibac dettol wash gel and made sure all rooms got properly aired out.
Good luck and hope he's better. Also don't be afraid to go back to the drs!
I forgot to mention my dr also said the diarolyte sachets were good but very difficult to get babies to drink them. Mine refused to for a few days she had as much juice / squash as she wanted (usually it's water only!)

Oh and my Dr also said it's best to avoid all dairy when they've got a tummy bug. She even tried me to stop breastfeeding but that was impossible!
Maybe lay off the yogurt?

I would second the advice of being wary of dairy while they recover.

My dd had been free of vomiting for 48 hours and back to her normal self. Went back to normal food - and she loves cheese, yoghurt etc. But that night was sick again. It was a one off so dont think the bug had come back. But upon googling found lots of info about them possibly becoming slightly dairy intolerant for a short while when they have a sickness bug. We kept her away from dairy for the next 2 days and no more sickness. Could be a coincidence, but I will avoid dairy for a few days if she gets another bug in the future.

My dd2 had bugs like this for a week or more. A bit of a surprise as dd1 always stops being sick after a few hours. Dry food if she wants it, like rice cakes, plain biscuits, baby crisps.

Slomi · 12/11/2019 17:19

Plain foods like toast and biscuits. A little apple and banana puree every so often works wonders if he has diarrhea. But don't worry if he barely touches food. As long as he's keeping his fluids up and in general good form you just have to ride it out. My 14 month old has had 3 tummy bugs in the last 5 months (joys of creche...). She went off food for 3-4 days each time, it's totally normal.

Absoluteunit · 12/11/2019 17:19

My DD had her first tummy bug at around 10 months and it was awful; the sickness stopped after a few days but loose poos for at least two weeks. Every time she looked like she was getting better it seemed to start again.

Hope your LO is feeling better soon

I woke up to all these replies, I am so grateful, thanks! I feel a bit more reassured thinking other mums have been through the same (well this seems silly now that I am writing it down, but you probably know what I mean...).
Baby was sick again at nursery yesterday but only because they gave him proper food, which I know it activates his gag reflex these days. He kept everything else down. This morning he woke up hungry and managed 5 oz of milk and half a portion of porridge. I am happy with that!
That was before reading about dairy....Now that I know I will see how it goes today and if vomit comes back I will suspend the milk/yogurt.
Doctor only mentioned that fruit could be acidic and not tolerated, but didn't mention dairy. Oh you live and learn! Thanks all :-)

Hi OP

You shouldn't have taken your LO back to nursery (or anywhere) until he had been free of all symptoms (especially vomiting and diarrhea) for at least 48 hours. This is exactly how these bugs are spread around!

It can often take days or even weeks for young children to recover completely from tummy bugs. Small amounts of fluids and their normal milk, light snacks when they want them.

I hope he's feeling better very soon!

Thanks Blackink, it's all a learning curve for me and I appreciate the input. I talked to the nursery the morning I decided not to send him in (which was 36 hours after the first episode) and they said they would not have taken him in anyway as they count 48 hours from when it starts, not from when the symptoms stop. And that they were looking forward to welcoming him back yesterday morning if he was well enough to go. I didn't hide any details and spoke again to them several times during the day. They probably have a different policy?

However, I can totally see your point and will be more careful in the future.
