Disposable nappies are unhygenic

I think disposable nappies are very unhygenic, having just returned from a holiday complex where I witnessed parents putting rolled up used nappies outside their chalets, only sometimes in a bag. Even some of the litter bins were full of them. The satisfying thing about using terry nappies, is that when I change a dirty one, the poo and liners go straight down the loo where it is supposed to go, and not into a landfill site, the thought of which makes me crynge! I wonder how many people using disposables scrape the poo down the loo first? I suppose it's possible to use a liner with a disposable nappy, but I don't know anyone who does, it's never mentioned, and the manufacturer's don't suggest it.

Human excrement is used as a crop fertiliser actually.

"I am surprised how much disposable nappies stink, even without the poo"

Oddly enough, my reusables smell far worse than when I use disposables.

jeremyvile - the point about washable nappies is to use a liner to 'catch' the poo and flush the poo down the toilet.

You shouldn't really wash poo in a washing machine

Yes, but does it all stay in the liner?

"You shouldn't really wash poo in a washing machine"

A dirty nappy where no poo escapes the liner is a very rare thing indeed.

JeremyVile · 19/08/2007 10:30

....and can you lob 'em out the window when you're done?

No, thought not.

It really makes no difference to me whether disposables are good, bad, or just plain ugly - without a tumble dryer how on Earth am I supposed to dry re-usables in this blardy rain?

And for the record, leaving them unwrapped in the stret is foul, and i would never do it. Even nabbing a carrier bag from the nearest shop is preferable if you run out of bags.

GodzillasBumcheek · 19/08/2007 10:35

Street, rather.

belgo · 19/08/2007 10:39

if the liner is placed properly, then it catches the poo.

I've never had a trouble drying the nappies inside the house. some nappies dry faster then others. depends on their surface area.

SuriCruise · 19/08/2007 10:44

D'ya know what i think of real nappies?

They're full of shit.

GodzillasBumcheek · 19/08/2007 10:45

I am happy for people to use 'real' nappies, but unfortunately our house is already damp. And small.

Didn't mean to suggests throwing the nappy away was illegal, just that the poo has to be scraped off and flushed first. But can't find source so am slinking off shamefacedly.

handlemecarefully · 19/08/2007 10:49

Gosh I'm acting very illegally then since I put dog poo in the general household waste (well wrapped in several layers of newspaper)

Awaits general roasting for merely mentioning dog ownership and dog poo on mumsnet

I figure if anybody wants to go rifling through my household waste that's their look out...and the bin men aren't at risk as it is well wrapped - as aforementioned

handlemecarefully · 19/08/2007 10:50

Ah I see littlelapin's post now - so technically not flouting the law yet

SuriCruise · 19/08/2007 10:50

Oh god yeah!
My "Dad" is a fucking wanker of the highest order.
I'll tower over him in a couple of years, then i'll kick his smug little head in - the fuckwit

FlameBatfink · 19/08/2007 10:52

All nappies stink - it is just a matter of what you have gotten used to/prefer.

I hate the smell of disps, but I use cloth all the time so they smell really weird to me, my friend hates the smell of my nappies because she used disps on all of hers.

As much as I love cloth, and for me there are lots of benefits, I have nothing against people using disposables and I can see all of their reasons.

Tis like breast v bottle for me - something that I know how I feel for my children, but other people can do what they like.

I am like Hunker and her anti-formula companies but not anti-FFeeders. I don't like the amount of waste with disposables, and I am actively trying to get cloth used more, but I don't want to beat the disposable users to death with a big stick.

FlameBatfink · 19/08/2007 10:53

Suri!

CatherineZetaJones3839 · 19/08/2007 10:53

I'll hold him, you kick him Suri

LizaRose · 19/08/2007 10:53

You should wrap and bin dog poo. Our sewage system is not set up to deal with carnivore faeces.

SuriCruise · 19/08/2007 10:54

Are we not carnivores?

FlameBatfink · 19/08/2007 10:56

You're not, you're an alien

FlameBatfink · 19/08/2007 10:56

(whole different food processing thing... aliens only pretend to eat the same as us)

CatherineZetaJones3839 · 19/08/2007 10:57

You should all be fruitarians like me...
