4 week old baby - is he sleeping too much at night?

Hi, my little boy is 4 weeks old. He is formula fed and we feed him on demand as advised by midwives. During the day he tends to go 4-5 hours between feeds. This has been the same of a night sometimes stretching to 6 hours apart from last night.

Yesterday he had a bottle at 6:15pm. I went to bed at 11pm and expected to be woken not long after. He in fact didn't wake until 4:45am so went 10 and a half hours!!!!! I felt absolutely awful when I woke up realising the time and that I should of just woken him.

All day today he has done his usual 4-5 hours. It's now 5am and his last feed was at 10:30pm so he's gone 6 and a half hours. I'm wide awake just waiting for him to wake up and watching the clock... should I wake him? Is he going too long of a night time between feeds now?

Mine were sleeping 7-6.30 with dream feed at 10pm by 6 weeks. I would let them sleep rather than wake them up.

Unless you've been advised to wake him for feeds at certain intervals e.g. if he lost too much of his birth weight / not putting on enough weight, then I think you can let him sleep. We had to wake my daughter every 3 hours to feed as advised by the paediatrician, but she quickly decided at about 5/6 days old that she needed more and started waking herself every 2 hours. He'll let you know when he's hungry Smile

If he's gaining weight and there are no medical issues I'd let him sleep! As a PP said, he'll let you know when he's hungry!

When my DS was born I was waking him until he was about 6 weeks old. But I wouldn’t do it again as he was a good weight at birth and continued to gain a lot ! If baby is gaining weight and doing well, let them sleep. People said to me never wake a sleeping baby- they were right! I’d keep doing 4 hourly feeds through the day and waking if needed during the day though. Enjoy it while it lasts ;-)

Your 4 week old sleeps better than my 3 year old...

As others have said, don’t wake them up if no medical need. Enjoy the peace!
