Muslins - can you just use a towel?!

So im a bit baffled. Im expecting my first and muslins are a bit of a mystery. I understand what they're for; wiping baby after feeds, throwing over your back when your burping etc. My question is do you actually need a muslin specifically? Wont a small towel do the trick?

ds is 12. we used tea towels, specific ones mind! could take all temps of wash, dirt cheap, small when folded.

I found muslins useful near the start when there was a lot of baby sick, but mostly I prefer to use terry nappies (i.e. small towels) and reusable wipes. Don't understand the hype about muslins.

God is getting uppity about muslins a thing? They’re just useful, I don’t think there’s a hype as such Grin

They’re very handy but I think I’m using them much more with my current baby (DC3) than I did with my others so you may not need hundreds.

I don't understand muslin they're thin and not useful imo. I bought a load of Terri towel nappies. Small size and useful for sick, drying baby's bum after nappy change etc

Obviously many folk found them useful, but, like most things baby, of courser you don't need them.
I never had any.
My babies wore a bib, and I usually had a terry towelling nappy if someone with 'nice' clothes on wanted to hold the baby and I was worried about their clothes. Bit thicker than a muslin which I can't imagine would be that 'vomit-proof'.

100% needed.
So much easier , lighter to wash and dry.
So much softer on baby.

With DS1, I had them everywhere - pukey baby so they were also on the bouncy chair, pushchair, under head in Moses basket and cot etc. DS2 didn’t puke a lot but kept a few for the odd vom, a sweat shield in the sling in the summer and putting under his chin when giving calpol etc. Towels a bit bulky for all that!

I was sent a version by my vietnamese auntie, that were like an enormous dish cloth. The old style white woven ones.

They were AMAZING, much better than the ones here, if not very pretty. I also now use them as tea towels. I would personally get the biggest size of dish cloth available if I had any more DC.

I like cheeky wipes.
