Very bad nappy rash on toddler

My 20 month old has very very bad nappy rash on his bum. Tonight he done a poo and wouldn't let me wipe it. He screamed and cried so much he threw up and now he's knackered himself out and gone to sleep. It's so bad he doesn't even want to sit in his high chair. I've been putting sudocreme on and last time I went to the GP about it they gave me hydrocortisone cream. I hate seeing him so upset. I have bad eczema so I know how it feels when your skin stings. He starts shaking where he's in so much pain 😔 does anyone have any advice on how to soothe him?

Metanium. It’s the best cream by far. A good thick layer over night and you will see a great improvement. It’s like a thick yellow chalky paste.

@Amberheartkitty
Okay thankyou I will look into this!!!

Bath without soap but with a fabric bag of oats - tends to be soothing.
I sympathise with the pain. Do you think he’s aware enough of his bodily functions to start to potty train? My son was just 2, but there was a woman at our playgroup who toilet trained her child earlier as she was about to have twins and wanted to get it over and done with before they arrived!

I've been told to let air get to it as much as possible

Travellingraspberry · 08/11/2019 18:11

Another vote for Metanium here, amazing stuff!

Second the metanium. It'll be easy to spot in the baby aisle - it's bright yellow. My toddler has terrible poos when teething and this is the only thing that sorts him out. I don't know what's in it, but it's basically magic 🤷‍♀️

SingingSea · 08/11/2019 18:13

Metanium works wonders for my toddler.

mumsince2018 · 08/11/2019 18:13

My husband is going to Tesco to get metanium now!! I'll do anything to see him out of pain! And yes my MIL was saying maybe we should think about potty training him. I mean he definitely knows when he's done a poo not sure about a wee though. I've tried sitting him on the toilet with one of those seats before and he just gets upset lol

Nappy off as much as possible and coconut oil works for us

meepmoop · 08/11/2019 18:18

We use Calendula cream on our DS and it works really well. I rate it more than metanium. We get it off Amazon

LauraPalmersBodybag · 08/11/2019 18:19

Metanium is the best over the counter solution but your go should be able to prescribe something better, and also something that isn’t hydrocortisone if that hurts.

Most importantly though the skin needs to be clean and dry and his nappy off. So just keep cleaning as much as possible, put the heating on and let him air out. HTH

LL83 · 08/11/2019 18:25

Different creams work for different people. Sudocreme was no use for my dd but brilliant for ds.

Agree nappy free when you can.

bobstersmum · 08/11/2019 18:25

My best advice is once it's better, use vaseline every single day morning and night without fail, it really does protect and nourish the skin.

mumsince2018 · 08/11/2019 18:26

When he wakes up I'm going to put him in the bath and load him up with cream after and leave his nappy off. I'm not too fussed if he wee's or poo's on the floor it's nothing a baby wipe can't fix. We are getting water wipes so they aren't as chemically harsh for him. Thankyou for all your advice!!

Is it just nappy rash or is it thrush on his bottom? Thrush rash has a very defined edge and can have spots in it. If other creams aren't working that may be why. Thrush needs miconazole (Daktarin) cream.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 08/11/2019 18:28

Can you just use water and cotton wool no wipes at all?

If it's that bad I would see the GP in case it needs a specific cream.

DameSylvieKrin · 08/11/2019 18:29

Also when he is wearing the nappy, change it much more often than usual when you can, up to once an hour.

owlofathena · 08/11/2019 18:29

Came on to say coconut oil but seems someone beat me to it. It is the only thing my daughter will let me apply if she has nappy rash

Ratbagratty · 08/11/2019 18:34

As pp say as much nappy free time as possible, mix Metanium with a bit of sudocreme. Is something he is eating triggering it? For my 2 it was tomatoes and oranges, for DN milk.

OrianaBanana · 08/11/2019 18:36

If you use water wipes make sure the area is properly dry afterwards - DS got nappy rash after using them, I thought it may have been because he didn’t dry off properly before the nappy went back on.

mumsince2018 · 08/11/2019 18:47

The back story is he's been constipated for around a week, then all day today his poos have been loose and he's literally pooed like 5 times today. So personally I think because he's had a sore bum anyway because of the constipation, and because he's been pooing a lot too so I've had to keep wiping him it's made him sore. I have been putting coconut oil on his bum Over the last week while he has been struggling to get his poo's out and it seems to really soothe him

CupoTeap · 08/11/2019 18:48

Detol Bath takes the sting right out, let him sit in it and play. You can see the difference when they get out.

mumsince2018 · 08/11/2019 18:48

Also because we've been trying to give him fresh orange juice and prune juice e.t.c the acidity has also given him nappy rash

I don't think cream really helps when it's really bad as the rash is there due to excess moisture and cream just adds to the moisture. It's good for a barrier but not actually clearing it up I've found. The only way I seemed to be able to clear my sons bum was to wash it with a luke warm cloth, pat it dry and put baby powder on it. That seemed to clear it within hours

RoLaren · 08/11/2019 18:51

Metanium is like magic, but watch for clothes/carpet staining! Worth it thoughSmile
