10 month old sticking finger down throat

DS aged 10.5 months keeps putting his fingers in his through making himself gag. One time he did it he brought up his milk feed he'd just had 😭😭I can't get him to stop, seems to just happen in his high chair/walker in the house. I shout no! at him and pull his hand away but i really don't like him doing it, any advice?

I seem to remember one of mine doing it for while. Don't know if it's something to do with teething. Stopped after a while.

Oh I remember DD doing this OP and I feel your pain. At first I used to say loudly NO. Until i realised she would look at me then do it, wanting a reaction. DD was a little older when she started though, in the end I just didn't give her any reaction and it soon stopped. I understand the frustration though especially when they make themselves sick.

I just wouldn't react to it, it'll just be a phase like everything else. My DD went through a period of putting her hand so far in her mouth she gagged on it, but she did stop. If it's unpleasant for him then he'll learn not to do it. They're still exploring their hands and mouth so it takes a bit of learning!

She thinks you saying no is fun. Stop reacting and she’ll stop.

My 20 month old does this. He will either gag and smile or laugh straight after or throw and find it funny. I think it's just an attention thing I just try to ignore him and pull his fingers out or distract him with something else! Kids are weird sometimes lol

Ivysaurus · 07/11/2019 12:09

Yeah he does often laugh when I say no to him, I just don't know how to stop him though, I guess take his hand away and offer a piece of food (since it 90% of the time happens in high chair) without saying no, trying to distract instead. I'll try it, just don't want him to make himself sick :(

I really do sympathise it's especially upsetting them doing it once they've eaten and you pray they don't sick up everything you've just given them. From my experience distraction has worked best for me either food or a toy anything really. When I say 'no' to my little one he just laughs (always has done I must be a comedian) so I try not to say that I just pull his hand out and distract him. Good luck with your little one, they are a puzzle!

Mine did this all the time! I think she just likes exploring her mouth and accidentally goes too far. If I see her doing it I gently take her hand out without saying anything. Ditto if she tries to stick objects like toys, food, strings, cloths too far down her throat. It seems to have worked as she rarely does it now, or she simply grew out of that phase.

Pomfluff · 07/11/2019 13:51

Forgot to mention she‘s exactly the same age, 10.5 months. Started around 7-8 months

Hahaha, I remember this phase, fondly named ‘fun with gag reflexes’... it will pass, ignore, yes they might vomit a couple of times but in the grand scheme of things it’s not the end of the world. It will quickly lose its novelty if you let it.

Thanks everyone, glad its a normal thing babies do at least! Tried not to fuss about it tonight, he tried a couple of times in the high chair I just put hand away then whisked him up into the bath so he didnt really do it much tonight luckily!
