Christmas trees and babies

Hi

I absolutely love a real tree but DS will be 10/11 months in December and is already all over the place and grabbing everything. Is it dangerous for me to have a real tree in case he tries to eat the pines?

What does everyone else do?

We had a small artificial tree on a high shelf for 3 years, Tree decs are a choking hazard apart from the needles .
Mind you my SIL put hers behind a stair gate. Have a tree if you can guarantee baby can’t reach it, otherwise plenty of time after DC is three or so

That’s extreme re-the Christmas tree being on a shelf! I’ve literally never met anyone with children who’ve done that. I think you’ll be OK OP!

We’ve had 2x Christmases with our daughter & she’s surprised me both times with leaving the tree alone. I love real trees but for ease, I did buy an artificial one as I didn’t like the idea of her eating pine needles (obviously). We have no decorations that could possibly cause a child hazard. Our baubles wouldn’t fit in my mouth, let alone a child’s! We put out plastic, none breakable baubles at the bottom of the tree and the nicer, glass ones and more decorative ones at the top where she can’t reach. I don’t use tinsel or beads or anything else, just an array of baubles and fairy lights. My daughter has been very curious both Christmases but after a day of pulling off the lower baubles, she lost interest and left it alone for the most part. She absolutely loved switching the lights on in the morning Grin

A couple of friends ended up putting their trees behind safety gates as they found their toddler pretty much pulled their tree over .. so it may perhaps depend on the nature of your child!

Have a fantastic first Christmas season, it’s so lovely with kids, even babies who just love all the lights & wrapping paper!

We've always had an artificial tree (we were given it 10 years ago and I didn't see the point in getting rid of it just to get another). Because it's small it's on a table anyway so dc couldn't reach it when they were babies.

I did the same as @BillywilliamV for a couple of years, crawling twins and a puppy were not a good combination for the tree!

We've had a real tree every year. Honestly, it's never been a big deal. Both of mine have been around 10-11 months their first christmas and neither was fussed with the tree. I think an artificial tree would probably be more enticing (as they aren't very prickly). We get the sort of real tree that is quite spiky. Honestly, I struggle to touch it just to get behind it to plug the lights in. Both of mine have showed some initial interest, touched it once or twice, and never really bothered with it again. We just put the breakable baubles up a bit higher out of reach and the non-glass ones towards the bottom.

We've put our tree in a travel cot in the past or playpen. Obviously not a real tree...
