How many layers does my DS need to wear to an outdoor evening event?

Hi all,

We're taking our 5 month old DS to an outdoor event early evening this weekend. I'm anxious about how many layers I need to dress him in to keep him warm and snug. I'll be taking both our pram and a sling. The event is only a few minutes walk from our house so if I see any signs that he's not happy I can get home quickly. Could someone please let me know how I should dress my baby for this event? We won't be out any more than an hour and a half or so (and then only if he's happy!)

Thanks Flowers

How cold will it be?

I usually found the baby carrier kept them pretty warm as they’re sharing your body heat.

I’d probably do whatever his normal daytime clothes are (vest and sleep suit for example) plus a jumper/cardi/fleece layer for the baby carrier and then a hat and maybe extra socks or booties of some kind. You can wear a big coat and kind of tuck them under your coat and you can always put a blanket on the top of the carrier if you think it’s really cold.

For the pram they could actually wear a pram suit or snow suit. But usually I just dressed my kids in an extra layer and added a blanket or 2. Just don’t forget the hat

my dd was the same age last winter and in the pram I used to put her in a vest and normal clothes/babygrow, thick cardie and hat and then layer with blankets, you can feel if theure too warm or too cold and remove or add blankets as you need

Keep the poor thing home in the warm.

An extra layer to what you'd wear yourself plus a blanket.

And if in a carrier you need to cover their legs with extra layers, so some extra socks plus some kind of booties or woolly socks.

Do you have a baby carrying coat or fleece?

@ballpitbonanza "Keep the poor thing home in the warm."

Confused

why would you keep a child in because it is cold outside? do you think people who live in much colder climates never let their child ourside??

babies are allowed to go outside in the cold... have you ever heard the expression "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing?"

Only in this day and age can taking a baby out in autumn for an hour in the evening have them described as "poor baby".

Lucky baby! Having parents willing to give them life experiences but also willing to take them home if necessary.

I agree with others.

Hat a must.
Sleep suit and vest.
Socks on top or booties.
Coat or all in one coat.

Blankets that can be added/removed as necessary.

If it's like here you'll need the rain shield more than the winter clothes today!

It’s warmer tonight then it will be on the school run in winter. Mums can hardly leave babies at home while the go to school and back with the older ones.

You are probably out now, but its freezing here tonight currently -1C according to google weather.
I go with rule of thumb of one more layer than the adults. Think carefully about feet and fingers.
If you went for the sling, I used to do an unbuttoned cardigan, and extra on legs and feet.

Hope you had a lovely evening.

Thank you so much for the replies.

As suggested we went with a vest, sleepsuit (with a pair of socks on top), a thick coat, a hat and a blanket.

We had a lovely evening though he ended up drifting off in his pram as soon as we left the house so missed out on all the action!
