Shit shit shit. Undercooked chicken & toddler

Just did chicken stir fry for 18 month old. Checked some of the chicken and it was fine, but then noticed she'd spat a bit out that wasn't fully cooked! Eek!! Stressing now.

Should I call 111? Keep an eye?

What will 111 do? Just wait and see if she throws up now.

dementedpixie · 02/11/2019 17:55

How pink was it? I'd just keep an eye and dont think you need to call 111

Pinkblueberry · 02/11/2019 17:56

I would just keep an eye and try not to worry yourself too much. It’s not great to eat undercooked chicken, but it’s not a certainty of food poisoning either. She’ll probably be fine, but obviously ring 111 if you have any concerns.

I would watch and wait. Chances are this will be absolutely fine. You could call 111 for reassurance but I don't think they could advise anything without symptoms. My absolute sympathy op. I have served up undercooked chick. The horror of it as I snatched back everyone's plates. We were all fine. Flowers

111 will presumably give me advice about whether a young toddler having raw chicken is a big concern, pottering?

The bit she spat out was definitely not cooked in the middle. I checked 3 bits and they were fine. Perhaps it was just this bit that wasn't but maybe there was more thst she didn't spit out?

God, I feel sick at the thought of it.

You can do to put your mind at rest. I'm pretty certain they'll say just keep an eye on if she starts with d&v though Smile

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 02/11/2019 18:13

Are you sure that bit was actually undercooked? It could have been a vein / blood stained area, stained from sauce etc. Just keep an eye on her and if she starts feeling ill then call 111, don’t wind yourself up.

Pinkblueberry · 02/11/2019 18:13

If it makes you feel any better - I used to know someone who quite enjoyed eating slightly undercooked chicken Confused although the risk of food poisoning is significantly higher than in other foods, it’s certainly not a definite.

Biancadelrioisback · 02/11/2019 18:14

Even so, id wait and see! She might be absolutely fine. 111 will almost definitely send you to A&E, they always do!

OlderthenYoungerNow · 02/11/2019 18:18

Yeah, definitely not cooked in the middle, I could tell from the texture of it.

How quick do you think it'd happen if it was bad? I'm 37 weeks pregnant as well so just generally feeling OTT about everything.

I did this to not just my toddler but two others I had over for tea! I was so mortified - I served up chicken strips and noodles to the toddlers then left the rest out with bagels for hungry mums to pick at. Sliced into one and there was a clear pink line through the middle. The mums both noticed but didn't say anything. All toddlers hoovered up their food. All were fine. I'm still recovering from the horror. (They are all now 10)

MyKingdomForBrie · 02/11/2019 18:29

@holycrumpets Christ you poor thing!!

OP I'm sure dc will be totally fine, it's very unlikely that she will be ill as it's only a problem if the chicken actually had dangerous bacteria on. Just keep an eye.

thecalmorchid · 02/11/2019 18:36

I think they vaccinate chickens now against salmonella, it's much less present than it once was. It's still
Important to cook chicken through but she should be fine. If she starts to show signs of being unwell call 111.

OlderthenYoungerNow · 03/11/2019 06:33

@holycrumpets, I second @MyKingdomForBrie! Sounds awful!

Update: toddler was fine overnight. No issues. She's still asleep so hoping it will continue!
