5 month old whining

My DD has always been a bit touchy, but also a delight. Babbling and laughing and all the lovely stuff. Lately she's whining a lot. It's breaking me! I can't figure out why. Teething? I've tried calpol and a gel from the chemist to see if it makes a difference. No sign of teeth. Lots of dribble. I take her to classes and social things a lot. She's usually just chill and sits there expressionless 🤷🏼‍♀️ but not upset. She's just come out of the long 5 week leap and has now started whinging and moaning constantly, especially when we meet other mums and babies, which is so hard and I don't want to stop socialising because my darling is grumpy. Not sure what to do. Just looking for some reassurance really. Possible reasons she might be so out of sorts. Pediatrician says she's doing very well. We haven't started weaning just yet. In a few weeks I think. I just want her to be happy. I feel I'm failing her because I can't work out why she's upset most of her time. Sleeps 630-630 and 4x 30-40min naps daily. Breastfed and 91 percentile. Maybe this is just her personality? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have a 5 month old and some days she whines more than others, she’s also dribbling lots! Teething seems pretty intense so I make sure has lots of things to gnaw on, and when she’s really frustrated, a dummy instantly soothes her gums, although I appreciate that not everyone will go down the dummy route. My DD is also getting impatient to move around, which is hard as she’s so much more aware of her surroundings but is only able to sit up right now. If she’s having a particularly moany time then sometimes sitting her on my lap and letting her chew/play with things from there helps.

What do you mean by 'whining'? Is it not just baby noises she is making?

PixieDustt · 02/11/2019 10:12

My DS is 17 weeks and just lately has started to teeth. Dribbles a lot and I can see a tooth coming through now. My DS takes a dummy and I found that the tommee tippee teething thing works really well it looks like a dummy but it's hard so he can bite down on it.
Quite irritable last night with his teeth and gave him a teetha sachet which worked brilliantly.
Maybe try granules rather than gel to see if that helps better?

My DD was like that at that age. It was partly teething but partly because she was getting frustrated by her limitations. Soon after she could sit up in a high chair and self feed, then shortly after that she learned to crawl and was a totally different baby. Its hard though, when they're always grouchy.

My boy sleeps 6.30-6.30 and has 3 to 4 30 minute naps. He’s always been a whinge bot but I honestly think the cat napping is just no good for him. He’s 7 months now and still high maintenance although much happier when we’re out and about now as he likes to look and touch things etc.
I think it’s a phase they all go through unless you’re lucky.
She probably is frustrated at wanting to do things but not being able.

Also anbesol liquid and a teething mitt are perfect for teething issues.

@runawaywithusthissummer she winces her face up and groans and whines and squirms.

@Abouttimemum my 5 month old cat naps it’s so frustrating as you can tell he’s tired when he wakes up do you think they’ll grow out of it ?

Abouttimemum · 03/11/2019 13:28

@sh13 Yeah he’s ok in the morning but he always wakes up from his last one exhausted and then he’s shattered and generally bad tempered until bedtime. I still put him down every couple of hours to make sure he’s getting at least 1.5-2 hours of naps. I’m hoping once he can stay awake longer and is a bit more active (he’s slightly behind as was premature) then it’ll improve but who knows!!
As long as he sleeps at night lol.

@Abouttimemum apparently the good night sleepers who cat nap during the day eventually wake loads in the night, according to "the little ones program" I've tried everything. She can self soothe but always wakes after 45 mins during the day. There is no infamous 2hr lunch nap in our house and even now at 6.5 months she's still moaning a lot. Rubbing her eyes a lot during the day. But she's now up at 5.30 am!! Used to be 630 😭
