Hi fellow mumsnetters,

I'm trying to teach my young DCs two nursery rhymes from my childhood but I can't remember the rest of the words. Are you able to help? Here they are:

It's 8 o'clock
It's time to get up
Mummy makes tea
She gives me a cup
Daddy's at home
At half past eight
He's eating his breakfast
He's going to be late
Now it's my turn
To go to school
(Can't remember the rest!! Arghh! Next one...)

Children says teacher
This is a Monday
Up with the bright Sun
Get all your work done
If you could help me
Put up the pictures
Put all the books away
Children says teacher
This is a Tuesday
(Cannot recall the rest. Googled etc. Nothing comes up!)

Many thanks in advance! Smile

Sorry, never heard of either of those.
But bumping for you.

I'm pretty good on nursery rhymes but never heard of either of those.

Nursery rhymes are a passion of mine and I have multiple books of them - and yet I've never heard these. Where did you learn them, OP?

funmummy48 · 01/11/2019 23:17

Another one who's never heard these......and I thought my nursery rhyme knowledge was pretty good.😮

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2019 23:17

I know loads of nursery rhymes but I'm not familiar with either of those.

You could just make up the last couple of lines to fit the rhymes.

Clangus00 · 01/11/2019 23:18

Never heard of them and I’ve been in early education for 22 years. Sorry.

From google:
It's Jamaican.

Where did you grow up?

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 01/11/2019 23:59

Hi all,

Wow sorry I didn't expect so many responses! I grew up in East London (1980's) but thinking about it, they were both taught to me by a teacher called Mr Adam who used to play the guitar. I'm just wondering now whether he made them up himself (or tweaked the words as one does sound similar to the one a pp mentioned) as he was quite good at music. Arghh I'll never now and they were really catchy tunes as well. I wonder if that teacher is still alive actually lol, I might have to hunt him down to ask him!

The second one def looks like a version of the Jamaican calypso song. Couldn't find the first one at all. Good luck with tracking down the musician/teacher.

Shake the Papaya Down*
Traditional Song
Mama says, No play! This is a work day,
Up with the bright sun, get all the work done!
If you will help me climb up the tall tree,
Shake the papaya down.

Sweet, sweet papaya, fruit of the island,
When all the work's done, dance on the white sands,
If you will help me climb up the tall tree
Shake the papaya down.

Shake them down, shake them down,
Climb the tall tree, shake them down!
Shake them down, shake them down,
Shake the papaya down!

Mama says, No play! This is a work day,
Up with the bright sun, get all the work done!
If you will help me climb up the tall tree,
Shake the papaya down.

I love papaya, yes I do,
Juicy papaya, yes I do!
If you will help me, I'll help you,
Shake the papaya down!

@Dilkhush

Aha it definitely looks like he used that song as an inspiration for his version!

I wonder if anyone on here can help me finish that last two lines of the first one 'It's 8 o'clock'. I can't think of anything suitable that rhymes Confused

How about....
Now it's my turn
To go to school
I hold Mummy's hand
'Cos that's the rule.

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 02/11/2019 06:46

@funmummy48

Thanks yes that could work! I think there was a line including '9 o'clock' though...🤔

At 9 o’clock
The school bell will ring
And we all line up
In the Hall, to sing

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 02/11/2019 08:58

Ah thanks @funmummy48, I think that would end it nicely! Smile
