Projectile vomiting after first vaccinations?

Hi,

My DD is 10 weeks and had her dTap vaccinations on Wednesday. She got a temperature of 38.5 last night but calpol helped keep it down. Today her temperature has been in normal range but about 20 minutes ago she had about 4 oz and threw it all up. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. My DD has a projectile vomit in the early hours of the morning following her 8 week vaccinations, and a friend’s DD did exactly the same. It was just the once and didn’t happen after the 12 or 16 week jabs. Hopefully nothing to worry about but I’d keep a close eye (as I’m sure you are) and get her seen if the temp isn’t controlled or you feel she isn’t right. Hope she’s feeling better soon!

I can see how that would worry you @smegsmeg. Does she seem okay in herself otherwise? And her temp is stable now?

Could just be that the vaccination has given her a bit of a funny tummy and that's caused the vomiting.

My GP would say that projectile vomiting is only when it hits the opposite wall (DS was a v sicky baby!!), would you describe it like that or was it just very forceful and covered the sofa or You wherever? Has she kept any milk down since?

Either way, keep a close eye on her and never worry about calling the NHS advice line if you get more worried.

It’s a common side effect of the vaccine, if you’re worried call 111 for advice.

Re the vomiting, try giving her small feeds more often than usual and offer sips of water in between feeds if she isn’t keeping any milk down. Again, if your worried call 111.

Thanks everyone for your replies! She has just thrown up another 4 oz so got concerned about dehydration and so rang 111. They said the vaccinations shouldn't have this effect so we have been told to get her to our local a & e for them to check her over. They suggested it might be a stomach bug so hopefully it's nothing serious!

Hope she’s ok, it could be a stomach bug however NHS 111 aren’t correct that the vaccine shouldn’t have a vomiting effect. Vomiting is a common side effect of the vaccine as detailed in the first link I posted.
