What to do with old car seat?

DD has grown up out of her infant carrier, so I’ve got a new car seat for her.

The infant carrier seat is barely used and certainly never been in a crash but I don’t know anyone who could make use of it and I wouldn’t expect a stranger to trust me on something this important.

So do I just throw it out? Seems like a waste

Keep it in the attic in case you have another baby? x

I'm in the same position, old car seat and not sure what to do. Won't be having any more kids , and seems such a waste to take to the dump

Put on fb marketplace. There is always someone less fortunate who would appreciate a free/low cost seat

I agree, try it on Marketplace or Gumtree & be clear it’s never been involved in a crash. Some people will be untrusting but there may be people desperate for one. Or there may be a local charity who take baby items..

If you know it’s never been in an accident then it’s perfectly fine to sell it on.

People do take them second hand and it would be better for somebody to take one in good condition that hasn't been in an accident than for them to end up with one of the ridiculously ancient and/or in terrible quality seats you see for sale sometimes.

Before you sell it make sure it has all the original parts - strap covers, newborn insert etc and the manual. Check that the straps are routed correctly and there is no gunk in the tightening mechanism, that all polystyrene is intact and if the cover comes off, that all the clips to attach it are intact. If it doesn't have the manual, find out where you can download it online and tell the buyer. Let them know how old it is as well as there is often a recommended total lifespan of a car seat (for an infant seat it will easily go through 3-6 children before reaching this, though).

If you've done all that you can pass it on with a totally clear conscience, I'd say :) Charge for it if you like, no problem.

Or a neighbour or friend who has become a grandparent? So, seat used by a gran or pa in their car incase of emergency?

JustLikeJasper · 24/10/2019 19:50

Ive just sold my 2 on Facebook market place theres lots of people not in a position to buy new

CalamityJune · 24/10/2019 20:14

There are lots for sale on our local FB marketplace. People do buy them for very infrequent journeys. We use one given from a friend in DH's car and my mum has a FB one in her car.

ferntwist · 24/10/2019 22:39

Freecycle it, I’m sure a nearby mum would be really grateful
