Tall daughter

Not sure if this is the right place but I need a bit of help with clothes for my 5yo. She is tall for her age and also very slim. It makes finding trousers for her difficult because they either fit on the leg or her waist never both. I buy the ones with the button and elastic but I have to pull them in so much that they look silly and are probably a bit uncomfortable. Tops are the same. Either short in her body or baggy looking.
She ends up looking a bit scruffy or like she is in someone else's clothes.
Any help on what I could do would be appreciated.
Thanks

Are you taking about school clothes or normal clothes?
M&S do great school clothes.
Normal clothes - dresses and tights?

I'd say you'd be better off buying a second hand sewing machine. Taking things in is usually a simple run along a seam and you could teach yourself to do very easily.

You might find that cheaper shops cut their designs more stingily, so clothes tend to be slimmer-fitting. Matalan, Primark and Tesco used to be very good for my slender dc. For school uniform, I would get M&S or John Lewis longer-length styles in a size that fitted their waists - often a couple of years smaller.

I have this problem with 9 yo DD. Here’s what we do:

  • H&M and vertbaudet both cut slightly slimmer
  • Leggings (H&M) instead of trousers. DD lives in leggings and baggy T-shirts and hoodies
  • Leggings with socks and ankle boots instead of tights with school skirt over the top (doesn’t matter that skirt is too short because leggings give coverage)
  • Learn to sew or find someone local who can do alternations. I make small alternations to about 30% of DD’s clothes. You start to get an eye for what can be easily taken in

DD is tall enough for teen clothing ranges now which is better as they tend to be cut slimmer and require less taking in. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

My dd was the same .. next do slim on line so buy the next age up but in slim and it's longer and the correct size for her age .. they have waist thingys too so she will no doubt have a baggy bum but that's the best option I have . She is 16 now and can wear women's size 4/6 but as they come in leg lengths then it's a lot easier .

Same here.

Verbaudet do a slim cut as do gap but not sure if it's in all stores. School trousers in Asda do a long and extra long so I used to go down age wise a couple of years and get extra long.

Mine used to wear dresses and tights or leggings a lot!

The European brands all tend to be slimmer cut.

Next slim fit trousers. Zara jeans are also tiny. And H and M are small made.

Thanks everyone. I have recently acquired my mum's old sewing machine so think it's time I learned how to use it.
School uniform was pinafore and tights which was working for us but then my dd started asking for trousers so pulled in waist it was.
I'll have a look at H&M see how she does with their clothes.
I'm pleased there is light at the end of the tunnel for her. With tall, petite etc becoming more popular in shops I am hoping by the time she is a teenager she will actually get clothes to fit her lol

Asda do longer-length pull on slim-legged school trousers online.

My very tall 7 year old is in 9/10, has usually worn Little Bird by Mothercare and H&M.

I second the leggings under skirts/dresses instead of tights.

RandomMess · 20/10/2019 09:43

Asda school trousers were brill they do extra long in the stretchy fabric ones, about 3 years since I bought them though.

Mintjulia · 20/10/2019 09:43

I have the same issue with my ds. The best place I’ve found is H&M. They don’t do everything but not bad.
Last week I had to cut 20cm out of the waistbands of M&S pyjamas and then reattach them, to get them to fit.
To be fair, M&S do “Skinny” school uniform in a long fitting, which helps.

Next have some with adjustable waistband that grow with your child
