Confused about rear facing car seats

Firstly I know you have to rear face until 15 months.

Im really confused though about this I found on the govt website. Does it mean lie flat OR rear face, or does it mean lie flat AND rear face?

So can you not rear face if you lie flat?

Yes you can keep using the iSize infant carriers past 15 months. Some people are still using them with two year olds and beyond! If her child still fits then there's no problem.

@dementedpixie when she looked at seats there didn’t seem to be any height based seats for that age - they were all for older children. I guess they must exists otherwise they wouldn’t be mentioned, but we couldn’t find anything.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2019 16:03

Was her current seat an iSize one as that is height based? Height based ones are only really from birth until 105cm. There is a 2nd phase of iSize seats for older children but dont know availability.

If she is under 105cm then she can stay in it even if over 15 months old

Or she can switch to a weight based seat

dementedpixie · 18/10/2019 16:04

But that should still be rear facing at under 9kg

Yeah but that’s why I said she was a bit stuck with it Pixie because she would have liked to have her forward facing - which she originally thought she could do in any seat at 15 months, but like you said that’s just for these elusive height based seats and otherwise weight restrictions still apply.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2019 16:21

But why does she want her to forward face? She's too light regardless of type of seat

dementedpixie · 18/10/2019 16:22

She would need to be a minimum height for the height based toddler seats which would be unlikely given her weight at 15 months

Pinkblueberry · 18/10/2019 16:28

But why does she want her to forward face? She's too light regardless of type of seat

I don’t know why in particular, I think she just felt ready to turn her around and a few people I know have done this at by 15 months and a bit younger - but that’s why the 15 months thing can be a bit of a confusing red herring, the 9kg weight limit is more significant.

I moved my LO forward facing at about 15 months abut one we've changed back to rear facing at the age of 2.5 and the seat should last us until about 5ish.
I've seen a lot of good reviews for the Axkid Minikid for rear facing after they out grown the infant carrier.
I'm not sure about the lie flat ones but if you didn't want to buy a lie flat one and had a long journey you could always plan in plenty of stops along the way.

Thanks everyone! This has made me feel much less confused about the whole issue. I feel like theres so much to learn. How tf do you learn stuff if you dont know what you dont know?! Im sure ill bumble along

Its best to keep them rear facing as long as possible, its alot safer for them.

I think it's best to get as much information as possible on things you dont know. It is a minefield though. I started with talking to the car seat people at mothercare and then went online to recommended sites and our HV to see if it backed up what they said.

Keep rear facing as long as you can.

Harrysmummy246 · 19/10/2019 19:55

To be honest I didn't take much stock in what Mothercare had to say as the only option for my 6mo at nearly 10kg we're forward facing and they had nothing rear facing to 25kg which I knew existed but they'd decided they weren't going to stock. So they don't stock what has been shown in tests to protect children better as it doesn't suit them to do so

Tigger001 · 20/10/2019 00:03

harrysmum what a shame they didnt advise you they sell their own branded one that is rear facing from 0 to 18kg and they can go in from birth.

That's why i always think its best getting your information from lots of sources and comparing to see if it tallys up.

Harrysmummy246 · 20/10/2019 10:19

Yes but I wanted rear facing to 25kg as my son is between 91 and 98 centile for length. And we have one seat that is also plus tested.

They didn't offer anything that went to 25kg rear facing.

And I don't believe, from memory rather than actually checking, I'm currently in charge of friends' DTs, that Mothercare own seats rate that highly when thoroughly tested

SilveryMountainStream · 20/10/2019 16:04

There's a fantastic and extremely knowledgeable Facebook group called "A-Z of Rear Facing" where the admins are very up to speed on the safest, crash tested and latest car seats and can advise you what will fit in your car, suit your requirements, where to go and try one with experienced fitters that actually know what they're talking about.

I Rate them very highly as they were a huge help finding the right extended rear facing seat for my 4yr old.

The argument of "I used to do xyz and it never did me any harm" is a moot point. You make your decisions based on the latest information available.

You wouldn't want someone doing heart surgery on you with info from 10/20yr ago, you'd want the latest info.

This doesn't pass judgment on those decisions made 20yr ago, they were made in good faith with the best information available at the time. If you know better, then you do better.
