Toddler temp 39.5'c - 24 hrs after first dose

Hi there.

Sorry, didn't know where to put this.

Our 20 month old has tonsillitis. We took him to urgent care yesterday after experiencing high temperature and fast breathing. We were prescribed penicillin. He's had four doses in the past 24 hours as well as calpol and Nurofen to keep his temp down.

He's been reasonably fine all day but since going to bed two hours ago his temperature has gone very high again. A reading of 39.5 just a moment ago. I've now given more Nurofen.

I'm surprised the penicillin hasn't kicked in yet. Is this normal? It seems the tonsillitis is still causing lots of problems.

If there's any suggestion to keeping the temperature a bit more under control, it'd be great to hear! Thank you.

Thats a high temp call 111 for the best advice

Not sure of temp that you should take toddler back to OOH, ring 111 for advice.

In mean time, keep dosing with Calpol and ibuprofen as per instructions. Keep clothing/bedding light, open window to cool room. Those were instructions I was given few years back while waiting for call.back from 111

Thanks. I must say that he had been lying on the ear which gave the high reading. The other ear gave a lower reading of 38'C.

He's sleeping upright on my partner now so will take his temp again soon to see if there's been an improvement.

In meantime give them a call bless him hope you all feel better soon x

OK, thanks..I just find 111 so useless. Call them, wait for hours for a call back then get told to go to urgent care and then wait for another three hours. And we're already prescribed antibiotics for him. But I know it's best to...

I had this problem with both my daughters try giving calpol and the 2 hours later nurofen so that they is always a cover of protection against pain and fever

HennaSaud786 · 19/10/2019 13:17

Strip him down maybe? I was giving ibuprofen and 2 hours later calpol, I gave my DD icecream and cold yogurts too. If it gets worse id take them to a GP. Hope he gets better soon!

Cutesbabasmummy · 19/10/2019 20:08

Strip him right down to his nappy or pants. Open a window a little and don't cover him up. Alternate with calpol and ibuprofen. Sometimes it takes a while for the antibiotics to work xxx

Don’t provoke shivering, his thermostat is telling him to heat up so cooling him down will just make his body work harder to heat back up again. A T-shirt and pyjama pants is best.

Keep an eye on signs of sepsis, a high temperature of 39 or more needs to be considered immediately if paracetamol and ibuprofen won’t bring it down within 30 minutes
