Day 9 of no dirty nappies!

DD2 is 8 weeks old and hasn't had a dirty nappy since last Saturday, she's in discomfort passing wind and has been letting out a scary new high pitched cry. She had several on the Saturday, one almighty explosion on Friday but prior to that hadn't had one since the previous Sunday. Before that she had several a day. The last nappies were normal, not hard or constipated looking. We've done warm baths, tummy massages etc. At the out of hours today the nurse refused to believe me Hmm and said if it gets to Wednesday (day 11) it would be "an emergency". She recommended giving a few ml of cooled boiled water but I thought this wasn't recommended for EBF babies? Any advice? I am really worried as DD is in lots of pain today.

Pretty normal for a EBF baby, it will come out at some point I’m sure!

braw · 14/10/2019 20:15

@Gustavo1 She had jags this week and according to the Wonder Weeks she's started leap 2 so who knows. It could be this or something else, but she is definitely sore and not herself.

My EBF baby went 9+ days each time until weaned.

All the BF experts said it was normal. I never experienced a little poo, everytime it was an explosion, normally in the car seat. Like a Mr Whippy ice cream filling the baby gro.

There is a national NCT number, free for everyone there will be BF experts on the end of the phone. 24/7 hrs a day.

Aw, poor little one. I think a call to the GP would be beneficial for both your sakes. It certainly can be very, very normal in breastfed babies but it is also concerning for you so some peace of mind will go a long way I think x

nespressowoo · 14/10/2019 20:43

Hi OP

Have you tried some vaseline in her bottom? Also a warm piece of cotton wool (soaked with warm water) I used to place this by DS's bottom and it would help stimulate it to get things moving.

Does she have bowel sounds? Did the GP listen for this? Is her belly distended and round?

ChillyB · 14/10/2019 20:44

Have YOU drank some fresh orange OP? Did the trick for my little one.

ParadiseLaundry · 14/10/2019 20:49

I'm on day 16 here with my 10 week old ebf baby!

We saw gp today and she was happy with him and said he wasn't constipated as his tummy was fine and he was very well in himself. She said we could give him 2.5ml of lactulose to hopefully get things moving and give it a few more days.

ParadiseLaundry · 14/10/2019 20:53

Ah just noticed @dementedpixie linked my thread about it Grin

I'm going to try @ChillyB s suggestion tomorrow!

braw · 14/10/2019 21:17

@nespressowoo bowel sounds as in passing wind? She definitely has that! Very smelly and often loud. The last few days accompanied by screaming beforehand. Not tried cotton wool or Vaseline.
@ChillyB @ParadiseLaundry I'm going to try it first thing tomorrow!

Please get a GP appointment. 9 days with pain doesn't sound great imo, I'd be straight down the doctors at day 7. But I'm a worrier.
Fingers crossed he is okay.

Gripe water is brilliant for this purpose. Worked well for my LO

Babybird03 · 15/10/2019 09:29

Hi. This must be a very stressful time for you. When my DD was born I was told that bf babies can go without a poo for days, my health visitor said her longest know was a week. I think your doing all the right things but speak to you health visitor, maybe pop down to the nearest centre where you can weigh your baby and ask them for advice, they will say your doing all the right things but will also keep an eye on the situation and step in when necessary. Health visitors are there for you up to the age of three and probably help with this sort of matter before anyone goes to A&E so it's not surprising they didn't know much about it.

Sideshowjen · 15/10/2019 10:09

OP my little one went 10 days without a poo once and he’s EBF. I was told by the HV it was normal but to get in touch with the GP if worried.

tangled2 · 15/10/2019 10:24

I had this issue, mine turned out to be because she wasn't taking in enough milk (I had breast feeding issues). Babies are excellent at absorbing breast milk, but maybe just check on the weight gain to make sure.

Kat2618 · 15/10/2019 13:52

9 days, bloody hell. Mine is 4 nd half months and I'd be freaking at one day, she does 3-7per day.. If you think its hurting your little one, get her in for medical help, ignore the nurse she sounds like a ding.. It's your baby...

MissPepper8 · 15/10/2019 13:53

winding and leg cycling exercises

Cycling the legs might be an idea, we used to do this with DS and he'd poo without fail. He was constipated quite a bit.

Have you been using anything like infacol? That can bung a baby up.

Gustavo1 · 15/10/2019 13:55

@braw Any luck?

braw · 15/10/2019 14:00

Called the HV, got antsy waiting for a call back so called GP. HV said she'd have recommended GP anyway. GP says give a few ml of water a couple of times a day but if we go 2 more days to come back as DD would need to be referred further at that point. I'm going to go to the local BF group as well, see if someone can have a look at latch etc to rule that out. Fingers crossed we get a result today or tomorrow. I'm really worried about her.

@MissPepper8 loads of leg cycling! Gets her to pass wind but nothing else. Nothing given other than BM and ranitidine. Gave one dose of gripe water a few days ago.

Cool boiled water.
My first would occasionally be uncomfortable like this and I resisted my mums advice to give her water (despite her having breastfed 7 children... ..)for too long.
I swear a little cool boiled water will fix it a s.a. p.

Mylittlepony374 · 15/10/2019 14:21

EBF too....

darlingsweetpea · 15/10/2019 14:29

It sounds painful for your little one. I found bicycle legs did nothing, instead I held my babies calf muscles and pushed her knees into her tummy. We had explosions!

OpheliaBee · 15/10/2019 14:34

It is normal for EBF babies but it sounds like she has reflux too? Ranitidine can make them quite constipated. See how you go with a little bit of water.

xJune88 · 15/10/2019 14:42

Ranitidine made my baby so constipated! When we switched to Omeprazole she had so many poos which must of been stuck inside her and she was a different baby completely. Hope you get a poo very soon! X
