Language evening classes in London - any recommendations?

I'm currently weighing up London South Bank, Westminster or UCL

Morley college (near Elephant and Castle) has lots, haven't tried there myself but its a lively interesting place. Did Cantonese at Westminster years ago - was good. What language do you want to learn?

TheBlonde · 14/08/2007 18:42

I am going to do Swedish

I looked at Morley but the classes start too early

I did Albanian at UCL a few years ago - it was ok. Have heard good things about Westminster, don't know about South Bank. I guess it would depend on what suits you re timings, location, etc.

TheBlonde · 14/08/2007 21:09

Timings are similar

UCL works out to about £11 per hour vs £4-£6.50 at the others

Do you know anything about the class sizes, are they smaller at UCL or are they just more expensive because it's UCL?

TBH I reckon a language class is pretty much what you make of it so more expensive def isn't necessarily better.

TheBlonde · 14/08/2007 21:32

UCL say max 12, London South Bank 15
UCL will do extra stuff like mail you the class notes etc if you miss a class

Hmmm, I don't think the class notes is a big deal. You could just get them from the next class or from another student in the meantime or if you're going to a text book then you could read up on it yourself.

Do you really not have a preference about the location in terms of convenience for work/home?

Buy a language course or rent it from the library - I learnt more Italian from my Linguaphone course than I did schlepping off to a 2-hour class every week. Probably as my teacher taught us one phrase then had everyone in the class repeat it one by one. By the time it got to me, I was miles away . The BBC does language courses on it's website as well.

TheBlonde · 14/08/2007 22:04

South Bank involves Elephant & Castle which is not an area I generally choose to walk about in so that is a bit offputting

If UCL was the same price as everywhere else then I would choose them

Hi,
I did my degrees at UCL, great place. They have a fab Scandinavian Studies department, would not hesitate to book a course there.

Why Swedish?

If you just want any Scandinavian language, I could offer Norwegian conversation, lol...

I'm impressed bookwormtailmum - I could never have learnt my Russian from a Linguaphone course. My head would have exploded. It nearly did even with our very lovely and gentle teacher!

bookwormtailmum · 14/08/2007 22:18

I think Russian is probably a lot harder than Italian to learn though. I was also dating an Italian man at the time . I attempted to learn a few words of Croat from a similar course earlier this year but it just sounded like throat-clearing to me .

Kewcumber · 14/08/2007 22:21

I did a year of Italian at a local authority night class and it was a bit easier. I liked the social aspects of the course, I met people to practice with, one of whom I still count as a friend.

TheBlonde · 14/08/2007 22:26

x-posts BWTM - we already have CDs and books
I need a class so I'll get time for study without the kids

Starry - I am married to a Swede

Good luck with that, I joyfully embarked on Polish for beginners for the very same reason.

Guitargirl · 15/08/2007 09:36

The Albanian class I did was full of women married or engaged to Albanians or Kosovar Albanians (except me!), they all thought I was a right weirdo for wanting to learn the language for any other reason .

bookwormtailmum · 15/08/2007 10:09

GG - what's wrong with learning a language for pure interest? .

Guitargirl · 15/08/2007 14:26

Dunno! That's exactly why I was there!!
