Microfibre nappies?

What are your experiences of microfibre? I'm wondering whether that's the way to go for us.

I'm attracted to it being quick drying as house is already covered in drying laundry and we're still mainly using disposables. Does the fact that it's artificial mean that LOs get more nappyrash? Does it wash okay (we have v hard water)? What are the disadvantages - why doesn't everyone go for it?!

And if you do rate them, which brand? I want some with poppers or velcro so Nursery can use them too. We have nippas for home use (also using trad terries) so could do that on microfibre ones if there was a good reason for the extra bother. DS is 1 and very slim (and wriggly).

All opinions welcome! (apart from ones about bad housekeeping of leaving laundry all over the house for weeks...)

I have a Bambinex Teddy and love it. It's an applix one, dries really quickly and looks sooo cute. Also it comes with a booster (think it's fleece topped so the main material in contact with baby's bottom is the fleece). I haven't noticed any nappy rash with it.

normabutty · 14/08/2007 15:50

It washes fine too...but I don't think we have aprticularly hard water so not sure how much use that is to you

maveta · 14/08/2007 16:07

Hi Lovage, just replied on your other post. I think people don´t always go for them because they might not like man made fibres but if you´re not bothered about that, it´s not an issue! As far as I´m aware it stays really soft and bambinex teddies seem really popular at the moment, although I haven´t tried them yet..although.. NO, NO no more nappies!

What's an aplix?! Can someone point me to a picture?

I guess I only like to wear cotton underwear (except for special occations ) so maybe I see why you might not go for microfibre. Hmm will think about this.

Any other opinions?

Aplix is a posh version of velcro. The only version of the teddy available at the mo is the aplix/velcro fastening as it is very new. The popper ones are due out next month. The microfibre is artificial but very soft against babies skin, whereas cotton terry can go crunchy after washing.

FlameBatfink · 14/08/2007 18:08

Aplix is velcro for nappies (stronger, longer lasting).

There is a picture of a nippa teddy in my profile (DS is modelling it - it is light blue n fluffy).

Never noticed any difference in rash with microfibre compared to natural fibres.

I like bumbles if you want a cotton nappy, it dries quite quickly compared to some others.

SpawnChorus · 14/08/2007 18:10

We have Totsbots fluffles. Used to have Totsbots originals (cotton) which were great, but then we got rid of our tumble drier, and they tok too long to dry and went too crunchy (we are also in a hard water area).

I really cannot recommend the fluffles highly enough. They are ludicrously soft and fluffy and are virtually dry enough to use when they come out of the machine. We have had no problems at all with rashes.

We have nippas, but I think they do poppers too.

nappyneeds · 14/08/2007 19:29

Yes - fluffles are good and come in popper or nippa but for a slimmer cut (which is perhaps preferable if using in the day) the bambinex teddies are definately the way to go imo. They are also available in blue, a lovely lime and white and we'll be stocking new colours as soon as they come out which I believe is September and may include a lovely pink for those girlie girls

FlameBatfink · 14/08/2007 19:45

Still loving the "lilac" (the one that turned up and was blue!!)

Flibbertyjibbet · 14/08/2007 20:02

Hijack hijack but its important-
FLAME!! FLAME!!!
I got a potential client from all that cold calling last week! Going to see him Monday morning with my little diagnostic questionnaire! Hopefully will get a few days consultancy work (and fees ) out of it.
Shame its wed tomorrow and I have to start the cold calling/leaflet/follow up call cycle all over again....

FlameBatfink · 14/08/2007 20:32

Yay!!!

nappyneeds · 15/08/2007 01:08

ah yes flame - seems im not the only one who is colour blind then

jabberwocky · 15/08/2007 05:03

One good thing about microfiber, IIRC, is that the really good stuff comes from Malden Mills and is made from recycled plastic.

FlameBatfink · 15/08/2007 08:32

lol - was showing them to DH saying "Do we want the green or blue for DS?" His reply was "Oooooooooh lilac I think..."

makesachange · 15/08/2007 13:36

"Aplix is velcro for nappies (stronger, longer lasting). "

Not actually accurate (sorry).

Velcro is a brand name for hook and eye fastening (that we all know as velcro)

Aplix is another brand name for hook and eye fastening (you would not know the difference unless you'd spent time learning about them - boy do I get boring if I try to explain it, so I won't).

There are various grades of each. Bambinex nappies use premium velcro - the best available - which is better than most hook and eye used on nappies.

This manifests as velcro which resists curling and hook wear - ie lasts longer.

On another note, I've got some size 1 Fluffles on sale at the moment (plus mumsnet 10% discount = 20% off) if anyone's interested... Please see small business ads for link to site...

Naomee · 16/08/2007 08:10

I use Fluffles and they are great! We live in a 2 bed terrace and it is invaluable to have something which dries so quickly - before we aquired a drier it was essential. Also use bamboozles which are good, but find the fluffles much more absorbant.

Never had a problem with nappy rash (DD is 9 months) but have heard that washing powder residues can build up, so am using soap nuts which are great...

I also found myself wondering why they don't seem as popular - I think it is the man-made aspect - they are also fairly bulky compared to some, but they perform excellently.

maveta · 16/08/2007 09:48

how do bambinex teddies compare to the bamboo nappies for slimness and absorbancy?

beckmo · 16/08/2007 12:56

I find my fluffles way too bulky and am selling them. Are the bambinex much slimmer? If so I would be tempted to buy some if so because I love the softness of microfibre.

FlameBatfink · 16/08/2007 13:03

Not as slim as the bamboo, but slimmer than fluffles. Absorbancy - I really like them, not too sure how they compare though.

maveta · 16/08/2007 15:35

go on flame, do a test for meeee... Despite dabbling in pockets, I am still going with my bambineo´s but would be really interested in some teddies esp. if they are more absorbant. I could do same absorbancy but definitely NOT less.. you know, power wee-ing lo and all that

FlameBatfink · 16/08/2007 15:42

See this is where I have the problem - I only have wambamboos - no bambineos. I have borrowed a bamboozle to test against the wambamboo as people are saying they aren't absorbant enough (were you one of them?), but ideally I need a used bambineo to try it against.

If I had one I could then do a teddy test too

Will start a thread...

Sazisi · 17/08/2007 17:51

I have 2 teddies, and much as I love them, I don't find them very absorbant. They seem to be saturated really quickly; I definitely wouldn't use them overnight.
They are fab for drying time though, and so gorgeous and tactile
I like having a handful of them, but wouldn't want to use microfibre exclusively.
I also think they could potentially be a bit sweaty in hot weather? This is mere speculation though..

JudgeJudyAndExecutioner · 17/08/2007 18:12

I use eenee pouch pants nappies

You can buy them in the uk but the Australian site for them with info is here link

I bought mine from Team Lollipop link

Basically they have an outer a pouch that attaches to it that stores the microfibre cloths and liner so when they are dirty unless it is a nightmare nappy you usually just take the microfibre cloth out of the pouch flush the flushable liner away and pop in a new cloth and liner.

They come in really lovely colours and look pretty cool too.
